race spec R154?
« on: Mar 01, 2013, 01:53:47 PM »
hello I'm George.  I have an 89 MK3 Toyota Supra and i'm looking to obtain more info to build my trans to race spec.  we've had multiple supras in the community have issues with the r154's breaking forks, gears ground down.  they all have one thing in common 600 ftlbs of torque or more.   we want to build a more reliable "race spec" R154.  i know stright gears could be an option but that is too much money and might as well go v160 trans.

my current set up:
1jzgte (twin turbo gone Single)
GT4294 1.01 AR @ 30 psi
2 walbro 400lph (e85 fuel pumps)
1200cc injectors
e-85
stage 4 ACT clutch kit
light wieght DM flywheel
Proefi 128 engine management
1zz COP

I have bought my new 1-2 and 3-4 sliders and hubs and r154 rebuild kit and they are on the way.

next paycheck i will buy:
BC r154 1st gear billet shift fork
DM 3rd and 4th billet sift forks
MC thrust washer
MC Heavy Duty Bearing Retainer for R154
and MC bushings for shifter.

any further info on race spec R154's or ways to make the r154 for reliable and take the abuse will be appreciated.

Nice sounding MK3, do you have a build page?

You might send BigMike or Marlin an email, or call the stor, and ask them about the hp/trq rating of their "Competition Series R150R 2WD RACE transmission", that is used in trophy trucks.

I need some help,I want to fix my trans,I dont even know what it is,I got it from attarco, they imported "30,000 engines and other parts,my trans would be a domestic model, for the japaneese market,I have it in a 1978  corona, its close ratio, and was supposed to have come out of a  japaneese supra. I bought it in 1987,any clue on identifying the model number,It needs 1 bearing, the bearing is bigger around than a US trans, its a steel case, thanks

With it being a '78 corona, the trans was likely out of a MKI Celica Supra or MKII Supra  .  The MKIII was released mid '86 and carried a very large price tag($50-80K today's $$) at the time so it wouldn't be from that generation.  If it is an 4m engine it is from the MKI and my guess is it has a w50, if it is an 5M it should be a w58 trans.

I would send BigMike and email with your engine information, and see if he can narrow it down.

You might also check out Spraforums or supramania, both of them have sections for the MKI and MKII Celica's and Celica Supra.  Both cites have vendors and international members, so if the bearing has to come from Japan, it shouldn't be an issue getting one.

If you didn't do an engine swap and only replaced the inline 4, then the engine and trans would have come out of a Celica and not the Celica Supra, which should mean one of these transmissions, W55, W58, T50.
