Hub gasket
« on: Jan 17, 2012, 09:32:39 PM »
So it seems like every single time I tear into my front axle the hub gasket (between the dial and the hub body) always gets screwed up, and now I have a leaky caliper so I'm tearing into axle again soon (upgrading from stock solid axle brakes to vented rotors and v6 calipers.) So my question is, is that gasket necessary? What do you guys use instead of that gasket? Or is there somewhere I can get just that gasket?

Been some time, but it's like a thin tan/brown paper gasket?  Just go to an auto parts store to get some sheets of gasket material, go to harbor freight and get a gasket hole cutter set, then trace out and make a ton of the gaskets for yourself.

Also, put a very light coating of grease on both sides of the gasket and it'll be less likely to tear

Without the gasket water gets in, dirt gets in and so on. You could (and I have) silicon it but it makes it a little harder to get off when needed. Nothing a good old rubber mallet won't fix though.

Make you own. Lay then gasket material over it and lightly tap the edges with a hammer. Instant gasket.  Make a punch using thin wall small tube, bevel the edge of a 2" length, instant punch for the holes.  OR lay the gasket on the lockout, and use the ball side of a ball peen hammer and tap out the holes with another hammer.
