3.9 Isuzu diesel or OM617 Mercedes Diesel
« on: Nov 26, 2011, 05:00:56 PM »
I have sources on both engines. Wondering which engine to install and why? I'd like pro's and con's of both, potential power output, fuel economy, and aftermarket support. The plan is to install into an 88 4runner, and possibly run the 5 speed transmission.

TIA, Carl.

I don't know anything about the Isuzu diesels or what kind of adapters are out there for that swap, but I've been wanting to do a OM617 swap in a Toyota for some time now. 4x4 Labs has an adapter to run either GM trannies, or the Toyota W56 behind the OM617. People I know that have Mercs with the OM617 or have done the swap seem to love the OM617, and they are very easy to convert to run on veggie oil (though I am sure the Isuzu is too). OM617s seem a lot more plentiful, or at least out here in California.

I'm leaning toward the Mercedes engine. I found one local to me, and have already done the research to be able to make it a legal swap here in Cali. I want to see what the potential power that could be gain from the engine.

A diesel motor was not offered in a Toyota truck for 1988, in Cali, so unless the laws have changed.  More research would be required. The smog exempt status of a diesel contradicts the law.  Which says it would have to be smogged, be from a newer vehicle, with fewer emissions, and come from a vehicle less than 6000 pds (if your putting it in the Toy).  The only way around it would be if you went the custom home built vehicle route, but again you would have to get rid of the Toy chassis, or research alternative fuel laws.

According to 4x4 Labs the ideal OM617 to obtain came in 1978-1985 300 cars. There were a lot of variants of the engine over the years but those are the most desirable.

This would again, be a serious hitch in the whole smog legal swap, on an 88.

Unfortunately so. I always wanted to do it in an older LC or an 84 or 85 Runner.

If you are considering the isuzu 3.9 you will most likely have to run the 4bd1t oilpan on either the 4bd1t or the 4bd2t depending on how much lift you have.  Ih8mud has lots of build threads for landcruisers with this engine.  You will also probably have to run stiffer springs up front to accommodate the much heavier engine.  Being a hilux and not very heavy overall the R-series transmission would probably be ok to run behind the 3.9.  There are a few folks converting some of the FJ62 Series A440 transmissions and using them behind the 3.9.  Check out Ih8mud.

about those engines you are talking about, we do have them in europe, and the hilux is delivered with dieselengine, its a 2,4 diesel without turbo, the newer one have turbo, output hk is 74 without turbo, 95 with turbo, this is bolt in, in hilux
about om 617 mb engine, you can make them with modification on dieselpump up to 450 hk, stock with standard turbo is 125 hk. be aware on broken cylinderheads, i haven broken a few,,
