I don't know him, but I lived in the apartments right behind the oil can henrys and walked by those toyotas quite a few times. I was just curious if I was right.

What year Benz was the engine from? There's a 1980 300SD locally for $800 (400k+ miles, still runs) with the same engine I'm trying to get since I don't have enough cubic feet of cash to build my hybrid. I'd like to know the specs for the engine plate, bushing and anything else that you had to make for this. The oil-burner will be going into my 84 so there's a little more room in the engine bay; probably won't have to mod the hood like you did.

Yeah mine was out of a 83 with 260k miles for $400. I don't really have all that many specs that I can remember, I think I used 5/16 steel for the adapter but if I was to do it again I would use 1/4. There was a spacer ring that was on the Mercedes flywheel that comes off, just gave it to the machine shop and told them to drill the 6 holes in the Toyota flywheel. The bushing is pretty self explanatory, just look at the pics I posted I think it was only like 1~1.5" long.

The oil-burner will be going into my 84 so there's a little more room in the engine bay; probably won't have to mod the hood like you did.

Its not so much the fact that the engine is long its that the om617 is a front sump and with hysteer the oilpan and steering is competing for the same space. A 2~3" body lift will help alot I still might go that route.

Awesome; that adapter plate looks thicker than 5/16"... I was thinking like 1/2" for beefiness. Do you know if it's possible to make that oil pan a rear-sump? I have hi-steer and a 2" body lift (that I am planning on taking off)... or could the engine mounts be raised a tad?

I don't know a lot about these diesels yet, but from a glance it wouldn't be possible because the oil pump and pickup are chain driven and all that gearing and crap protrude pretty deep into the oilpan. See that's exactly what I did, I mounted it high enough so it would clear the steering but then its sticking out above your hood line. Right now I'm kicking the idea of pushing the engine back 18" to clear the steering and the axle.

If you ran the OM617 with the 4x4 Labs steering, would it eliminate the high steer/oil pan issue?

Just first glance I would have to say it would have many of the same issues. I'll take some pictures tomorrow to show what I'm talking about. Maybe there is something simple I'm overlooking. The problem would be even worse if you had springs that moved your axle forward, that is why I went with the wagoneer springs.

This is from the Lab's OM617 conversion FAQ:

12. Any top or bottom clearance issues?

Rough dimensions are- Length 33.5″ back of valve cover to front of fan, Depth 27″ top of valve cover to bottom of oil pan, Width 14.5″ widest part of oil pan. The OM617 has a front sump oil pan so there may be some differential interference on spring under 4wd rigs. Note: We are developing a dry sump oiling system for this engine so the oil pan can be shortened up considerably. With a dry sump system you can flip upside down and still be running without damage to the engine. This will be advantageous for the off road market since rollovers are relatively common.

Might be worth calling them to see if this ever made it to development.

Mine's stock location, I knew the steering would be close that is why I didn't got with RUFS.
