Hey Mini, you got a picture of your exhaust manifold?  I got a older style that isn't allowing me to hook up my downpipe!   :cheese:

I found out I got the 20r manifold and after I spent $ to get it all machined and welded up, it won't work!  :tantrum:  So, I have to go and see if he has the one like yours still!  And start all over again!

mini, there is an exhaust gasket, it is like a paper/,etal donut and is about 1/4" thick... i have an extra one, haha, although you need 2..... i have the part numbers for them from napa if you need them....

There are 2 vent tubes coming from the valve cover, Because we all know we cant have oil fumes going out into our air, stupid emissions. So toyota runs it back into the intake and it basically allows oil to pour into your throttle body and gum up the butterfly and the rest of the intake plenum.

Toyota does this for very good reasons. Here are a few:

1) These ports keep a constant vacuum inside of the crank case which help seals (such as cam and crankshaft seals) seal, and this vacuum helps maintain a large difference in cylinder-to-crank case pressures, which help the piston oil rings seal.

2) Intake valves. The light oil vapors that are introduced to the intake help lubricate the intake valves as they are seating, and also the valve stems.

3) The engine is not designed to have excessive oil exiting through these ports, only light vapors. If you see an engine with the small valve cover air filter vents that has oil puking all over it, then this engine likely has compression blow-by past the pistons and are causing a high pressure inside of the crank case.

I am sure there are other beneficial factors in having intake vacuum scavenge the crank case, but these are surely the more important ones.

Regarding smog, remember that burning oil has very little effect to the pollutants that are being measured. Our old '87 4Runner would kick out blue smoke for 5 mins after every time you started it up, and I remember one time while getting smogged, it smoked so bad that the smog tech had to walk out side the building to get fresh air. The 4Runner sailed through smog with all figures well below even the average values. I would think that the increased amount of oil in the combustion chamber would cause the spark to misfire and thusly the engine pollute, but this apparently is not the case. (?)

I have not seen a whole lot of newer engines, however of the ones I have seen still have plenty of intake lines sucking fumes from valve covers. They really are there for a reason.

I won't argue about gumming up everything. I've spent many hours cleaning out filthy intake manifolds, but again, this is a sign of other serious engine problems, such as worn out pistons and rings.

I will say this: If all you care about is getting more power, then bypassing this oil breather system would help with the following:

1) Prevent hot crank case air from entering your fresh intake charge. Remember, for ever 1° C of intake temp drop, you gain about 1% in power.

2) Prevent oil fumes from entering intake charge. Less oil in the intake = more room for fuel and oxygen.

3) Less gunk in the intake system = correct intake air flow characteristics.

Etc.

But if you start loosing seals and piston ring performance, and your engine starts leaking oil, is it worth the extra 1% in power, if that? And yes, this is being pretty darn picky, as most of us have our engines in and out so much the constants don't stay constant for long.

My engine used to be one of those "serious engine problems". When I bought it, it was blown and we took 2 motors to make one good one.

Question: Will leaving the gunk in there as it currently is (not wet) hurt anything?

EDIT: PS. No plans to disco the tube, just wanted to make sure nothing was wrong currently.

Nothing you will notice, but if you have it torn apart, then I would clean it up. Having a clear intake gives you a baseline to monitor for the next time you tear back into the engine. If its totally filthy again just after 2 months, then something wrong is going on

Ahh mike well that makes a lot more sense to me. I left the rear line still connected so i still have vacuum running through the valve cover, i figured it would be good to leave at leased one in place. Im sure a lot of the gunk that was in mine was from the previous motor i had in because it didnt last too long.

Ok, so I got a new throwout bearing for the tranny and got the tranny half way bolted up last night! That was so much fun I hope I never have to do it again! anyways, all that is left is to finish bolting up the tranny, bolt up the transfer case crossmember, replace my left rear shock, install my shifters, install my CB, and hopefully install my Sirius radio bracket.

MiniSimp

Ok, tranny is finished and all bolted up.

Next on the list:
Buy exhaust doughnuts
Buy PC9000 shock
Install Exhaust
Install LCE Motor mounts
Install CB
Install Skid Plate
Test Drive at Carnegie before MCR6

That's it!?  Dang...mt MCR list is about 6 pages long right now...
