Anyone ever break a rear axle shaft?
« on: Jun 18, 2011, 06:17:26 AM »
I just swapped out axle housing on my truck because the housing was bent and cracked. So I have two rear axle shafts and I was wondering if I should keep them for spares or just scrap them. I don't have alot of room to have stuff sitting around and I personally have never broke one or even heard of one breaking.Oh and I only run 35's so it'd not like I'm on 40's.Thanks for the input.

Its extremely rare to break a rear axle shaft.  They do bend tho.  Most of the time its due to big tires, lockers and being really hard on your truck.
Not sure if I would keep them as spares.  Might try and sell them if you can.

I broke a rear one once.

A buddy has broken more than a couple in a basically identical 4runner.

Couldnt hurt to keep them, if anythin for brake parts or if your bearings go bad.

I have a buddy on 37's locked f/r with stock birfields(so he is not that hard on the truck due to the stock birfs and a locker) and he broke a rear axle shaft. You don't really hear of anyone breaking them but it can and does happen.

If I can't pawn it off on my buddy I think I 'll get rid of it.

I would get rid of them. It's not like it would be hard to find if you did have a problem they are cheap too. I defiantly would not carry them as trail spares.

I carry one, just because I am paranoid.  It's not heavy without the drum assembly, don't need the drums.  If I carry it, I will never break one, if I don't I will.  Someone might need one someday, and I'll be there to help out.

Any spare is a good spare if it gets you off the trail, why sell them if they may save you some day.

i broke mine driving around a corner in town! not fast or anything. just taking the corning normal. POW! sheared off right before the splines. Open diff and 31" tires too. But because of snapping the axle i ended up ordering everything for my sas the next day.
