Broke rear axle shaft/something else
« on: Mar 15, 2006, 06:12:34 AM »
Well, I finally did it, I broke a rear axle shaft and something else. I haven't taken it apart yet but I know for sure that I broke my passenger rear axle shaft but something else isn't right. Sometimes the drivers side will pull and sometimes it won't, figured that out when I was loading it on the trailer. I'm thinking it's the locker. I'm going to pull it today and hopefully have some pics tomorrow.

What did it do as you loaded it on the trailer, does it go forward a little make some noise, go forward a little make some noise, etc. etc.?

No, I started to load it on the trailer and it wouldn't pull on it. I noticed that the front tires spun about two times around and the back never moved. But I can put it in two wheel drive and it'll pull.

:headscratch: I know it's hard to express sound here but describe the sound you heard when you broke your axle.

Ok, I just got it pulled and it wasn't the axle like I thought it was. The locker is broke, the ring and pinion are chewed up and the pinion gear is up against the carrier. So if anyone has a 3rd with 4.88's and a locker for sale let me know.

That's what I was thinking, the fact that it would then wouldn't work usually means r&p not an axle, the locker probably blew from the shock load transmitted when the gears let loose, an unfortunate common thing for the locker to do that.

factory 4:10 third r/p are the strongest... yet they can still be broken.  :gap:

You're a helluva lot luckier than I rs!  My truck eats 4.37s.  I keep breaking the pinion teeth off, even with 31s and peg leggin it.

I didn't actually break the r/p, they're chewed up from the chunks of locker and carrier that got in between them. Also, the top part of some of the teeth on the pinion are broke off about 1/4" from the top. I had a lockright locker but I'm going to a Detriot because I don't really want a spool in there.

it says lockright in the post right above yours.
sounds like you may have broke the pins in the locker and the broken parts ended up in the R&P.
cant go wrong with a detroit in the rear, they have a hard time in the front if you break birfs/axles often.
i have had my detroit in the rear for 5 years now without a single issue with it.
its been through the rubicon multiple times, hammers and many other trails.

Hey KSmith ..... I have a fairly new, low mileage E-locker with "brand new" ZERO miles on it 4:88 ratio that i am thinking about parting way with.  Was going to put it in the back of the S-10 but am now strongly considering a Ford 9 inch instead.  Those E- lockers have a reputation for being the strongest Toy 3rd member out there. :muscles:

I just ordered a new complete 3rd from Randy's R&P. It has 4.88's and a spool, everythings new. It should be here Friday so I'll have to test it out this weekend.
