22re over heating
« on: Apr 18, 2011, 05:53:39 PM »
NEED HELP! Just replace my timing chain, gears and cover, water pump, and head on a 85 pickup 22re. Now it seems like the water is not circulating right. It heat up but the hoses don't feel that hot... they do get warm but not hot. There is no antifreeze in the oil... just thinking i did do something right. This is my first timing chain and head job. i bought the truck with the head off of it. The guy i bought it from told me the head was bad. I got a re-man head and went to work. Now it run with a miss probably timing but it sounds great. Just has the over heat issues. Hope i don't have to due it again. Any help would be great Thanks Rick

Did you put a new thermostat in there?
Also make sure there is no air in the water system.. there could be an air pocket.

If your hoses aren't hot, you either have a flow restriction or air in the system. Crack the bleeder on the thermo housing and with the rad cap off get the air out by revving the motor and add coolant as needed to the rad. Do not drive it the way it is!

First of all, where did you get all the parts from?
Did you put the t-stat in right?
How's the clutch fan?
By any chance did the PO put in stop leak in before pulling the head?
How's the radiator?

The best and easiest ways of burping air from the motor is park it on a steep incline.  Radiator at the highest spot of course.

Assuming you replaced old parts with good parts....i'd put my money on it being an air pocket
