which leaves to use
« on: Feb 09, 2011, 12:06:07 AM »
I have an 89 toyota ext cab.  Currently it has a solid axle swap with trailgear 5" HD springs.  I hate the way it rides, fees, and looks.  I'm currently deployed in afghanistan but have big plans for the rig when I get home.  To start, I want to switch the leaves.  I know that Marlin likes all pro, but curious as to what you all thought.  I plan on having 35 or 36 inch tires, so I know I might have some trimming to do but I'm thinking of just getting trailgear 4" leaves.  What are your opinions.  There is a picture of my truck in my avatar, I can't load pictures up while here... sorry

First of all thanks for your service :usa:

As far springs go I would go ruf and chevy's/f-150s. Probably the easiest/cheapest combo out there. You can build your own front spring pack pretty easily using ruf and it moves your axle 2-3 inches forward. If you are set on using name brand springs I would probably go all-pro. Never heard anything bad about them, unlike the tg springs.

What years of F150's are good to use the rear springs? 2wd or 4wd?

i think mine came from a 88 or 89 2wd F150.  the 4wd F150's are 3 inch wide and dont have as much arc to them as the 2wd.

for a 4runner  you'll need to add an extra leaf like I did

Looks like 2wd F-150, 1986 to 1995 are the ones to look for. Yea, think I might need to add a leaf with the extra weight of the 4Runner. Plus I carry alot of stuff.

Im planning on ruf with f150s, probably the plus one leaf for the rear cuz Im in a runner.

Thank you for your service, keep an eye on my little bro if your still there in a few weeks. he will be the one driving SUVs off the base :( and MAKE SURE you hook up with the VA when you do get out ;)
Sand, what fun, drop pressure to 12psi, stock tires are still digging, can't afford to get stuck, 8psi, still not working. Find a place to GET OUT, air up, un-lock hubs,  WAIT whats this, hubs are UN-LOCKED already. 2wd, 8psi, stock tires, Oregon sand dunes.

but you have to run blocks with the 63's  you dont with the f150s AND the f150's dont stick past the end of the frame like a stock step bumper

Thanks for all the replies.  It sounds like the f150's are the best but at this point I'm just trying to find a bolt on part to lower my rig and improve the ride.  I'm not decided on the height of the springs yet, but I'll probably get allpro 3" or 4".  I want to have 35" maybe even 36" tires.  I should be back from my deployment around the end of April so that's when I'll be able to show some pics of the updates.  Thanks guys....
