Alright here is the deal, I got an older brother that is wanting to get into a newer vehicle and he currently has a 1998 Toyota 4-runner that i feel is in good shape.. interior is perfect. motor has about 150k miles on it and its a 3.4..

I'll be able to pick it up pretty cheap from him and i was thinking about putting the parts from my 84 on it.. SAS it and move all my junk to it. just an idea. anyways here is a few pics of them both.

do it dont do it.. maybe just pick it up can keep it stock.

Why get rid of that beutiful '84?  Do you have kids you want too haul around?

87hillbillyoter

i say you give the best looking yota ive ever seen to me, then buy the runner :gap: no but really, you should get the runner, swap the 3.4 into the 84, then part everything out. you will probably even make a profit that way. just my :twocents:

I personally like having both.... 4runners have all that room and pickups can haul stuff in the bed... if you can afford it have both! :beerchug:

I'd say buy the 4runner for a dd and wheel the truck. That 4runner looks way too nice to tear apart for just the engine. I think you would run into problems trying to put the parts from your truck onto the 4runner also.

SamuelEngelking

yea thats what im thinking..wheel '84, dd runner..

For 2k even if it doesn't work out you can sell the runner and make a good profit easily.

The 4runner as a dd and the 84 for a wheeler seems like it would be easiest though. Your truck is already on propane and looks to be fairly built and the 4runner seems like it would be a nice comfy dd, especially with the power of the 3.4.  :twocents:

NorCalToy

Buy the runner and have a super nice DD and keep the 88 and wheel it.

IMO the runner is too nice too yank the engine and part out. A clean well done SAS would be cool on it but if you already have a nice streetable wheeler then theres not really a point... :dunno: :twocents:

Don't let that 4Runner get away, DD it and park the truck for play. You can also build the 4Runner for a moderate duty wheeler even with the IFS.

DD the Runner (cuz 2k for that clean of a runner is a steal), and wheel the 84. Problem solved. Down the road you can hack up the Runner if you want.

My first rig was an 85 Truck and in an effort to be ready for family expansion I took an opportunity to get into an SAS 89 4Runner.  The 4Runner has all of the aftermarket parts that were on the truck plus Alcan springs, 2nd transfer case, cross over steering, larger tires, fuel injection and a winch, but the truck was still easier to wheel (I'm primarily thinking about Moab).  I think the combination of the extra weight, different weight distribution and shorter wheelbase make the 4Runner inferior all aftermarket parts being equal.  I wouldn't go back to the truck because the 4Runner provides utility that I'd never have with the truck, but the truck was amazing off road.

If I were you I'd jump on the opportunity to get the 4Runner as a DD, but wouldn't build it for off road unless you need the room or beat the truck up to the point you don't want to drive it anymore.  The truck will always be the better off road vehicle in my opinion.  You can take that truck places that would be very difficult with larger body of the 4Runner.

By the way, if you put a hand throttle on the shifter of your 84 it'll make having a carb much easier to deal with.   My 85 would run pretty well as long as I had mine installed so I could clutch and brake with two feet and keep it running with the hand throttle.  I got mine from Rubicon Express.  It's an excellent mod.

I have a 97 4Runner (194,000 miles) as my dd and a 96 Tacoma for my fun vehicle. Its nice having two vehicles because you don't worry about having to bum rides if you mess something up while you are out climbing over rocks.

Both these rigs are in really good condition, keep both and you'll wheel longer and wont get sick of fixing stuff if its not also you DD. Just like twistedtoy92 said. Two is better than one.
