Adjust the valves and make sure the timing chain guides are there

(I'm not sure when toyota started with the POS plastic guides for the 22R)

Could just be noisy injectors....

How do you hear the injectors over the valve noise?

It may not be valve noise, the injectors can get real clicky to the point they sound like lifters as he stated in the OP.

Fellow boneheads.......... Toyota has always been using the plastic timing chain guides. The metal ones are aftermarket. If you are using the after market steel (plastic coated) guides they will make a similar sound. When the plastic wears off. I rebuilt a buddies 22RE after about 40K miles he mentioned that the valves needed adjusted. After doing so. the noise was still apparent. mmmm after further checking we noticed plastic in his oil. Thus thinking it may be the guides. In which it was. We replaced them with Factory chain and guides. Problem solved.  There are alot of companies making cheap overhaul kits nowadays. Be careful who you buy from. Just because it was made in Japan (same place Toyota was) Doesn't mean it carries the same quality. Beware of cheap imitators from Mexico.

i have an 85 22re and a 92 22re both of which "tick" but the 85 is way quieter. i have tried everything to quiet down the 92 but finally realized with a stethascope that it was indeed the injectors making the noise which are different between these trucks. i have considered buying 85 injectors for the 92 but the plugs are different and what a lot of work anyway.
I think the 85 injectors are low impedance and the 92 have high impedance fuel injectors , but I dont no if that would make the 92 high impedance injectors louder

Take a long screw driver touch the tip to where you think the noise is coming from and put the handle to your ear. You will be able to hear it.
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

I set mine at 007 and 011, and the noise went away. Steel guides are overrated, and part of a good maintence practice would be changing the chain and guides
around 120 to 150000 anyhow.
I put my thumb on the rockers while it was running to find the noise maker. Be sure to pull out the adjuster screw to check for wear, otherwise you'll never get a true reading.

Could also be a valve cover that is tightened down too far - the timing chain will slap on the inside of it.  I've seen this with people that keep tightening down the valve cover to try to fix a oil leak.
