weird windshield wiper problem
« on: Dec 09, 2010, 06:07:54 PM »
this little problem didnt happen last winter but when im at idol with windshield wipers on there dang near hitting the hood, at 30-40 mph there perfect and 45 and above there not going down the the bottom of the windshield but going off of the windshield and hitting the pillars of the truck. its not a rpm issue neutral (o mph) at 3,4, or 5 grand there still going past bottom of windshield, 70mph neutral or 5th doesnt matter there going off the windhield and hiting the a-pillars. lol there possesed. Any ideas. Thanks guys

Sounds like there is alot of slop in the linkage.  It is speed/wind resistance that is causing them to do this.

sloopy linkage at idle they hit hood cuz no wind is pushing on the wipers then when going to fast they will flop off windsheild cuz of the amont of move ment in your wiper linkage under the cowling by wiper motor

its' the linkage, mine did the same thing, it threw me off for a bit because there was no regular pattern for any of it.  When I pulled it all out I was surprised at how bad it all was.  Sometimes at the top mine would actually come off the windshield.

Agreed, linkage.  Right after I bought my 91 my wipers started sporatically coming all the way out over the a-pillar, scratching the crap out of it.  Took it out and the bushings were gone, pulled them from my 4runner, installed and all was fine.  Wish I'd known before it messed up my paint  :shake:

not really the linkage  .. but the wiper arms are "press fit " onto the linkage post . The nut on top holds them down .

The linkage post is "splined"........... and the "press fit" of the arm , builds splines in the wiper arm and keeps the arm in place . if the arms are ever forzen to the windshield , or heavy mud situations  ect .. the "splines" on the arm will strip , causing them to flop all over the place .. tightening the arm nut dosnt usually work because the hole has been enlarged ..
