v6 diff head aches
« on: Nov 16, 2010, 06:42:55 PM »
ive been trying to set up my v6 diff for a few days now i started with a .085 shim and the pattern was to deep i then went to a .078 shim and still to deep. im now at a .064 shim and im still to deep. i have a 12"lbs preload on the pinion and .010 back lash. the total preload of the assmbly is 25"lbs. im concerned that the pattern is very narrow. its not a wide set pattern like i have seen on other gears builds. im also concerned about how little the pattern moves with each change in pinion shim. there are some pictures of what the gears looked like with the .068 shim. also i am loading the carrier when im rotating the carrier with the paint on them. thanks for any help.

Are you sure you have the pinnion bearing races seated all the way down?

Ya I double checked that today. I've taken more shim out of the pinion and I'm starting to get a decent pattern. I think this gear set is just trying to drive

From what I have learned, different gear sets by different manufacturers require different pinion shims.  ZUK has said this several times.  FYI here's his cheat sheet. http://www.gearinstalls.com/cheatsheet.htm

If you put the races in the freezer for a few hours or overnight they go in a lot easier. we used to blast them with CO2 fire extinguishers that also works great on your beverage of choice.
