85 22RE head vs. 84 22R head
« on: Dec 01, 2005, 02:03:26 PM »
Quick background, I've got an 84 4Runner with a blown up 22R.  I just bought an 85 4Runner for cheap ($375  ) with a 250K 22RE that needs a rebuild.  The guy said the head might be ruined on it.  Are the heads swapable from the 84 22R to the 85 22RE.  I want to say no but I needed the expert opinions here first  :beerchug:

yes....they are swapable, the only difference between the two are the shapes of the exhaust ports, and the cams, other than that, run it

NO!  they are not swappable!  the early engines have a short head and the late engines have a taller head, which leads to your timing chain either being too tight or too loose depending on how you mix and match them together.

also, early('81-84) engines had domed pistons that'll most definitely smash into a late style head which is meant for flat-top pistons.

Kyle's right here.  The early heads are open combustion chambers (looks like a O) and the late ones are closed (looks like an 8).  typically, 81-84 will interchange with each other, and 85-95 will interchange with each other.

well if it was an efi-carb '81-84 or an efi-carb swap from an '85-95 block it's no problem.  the head/block/piston interchange is a year issue, not an issue of efi or carbureted.  a 22RE is just a 22R with a different intake and distributor.

PM me, i have an extra head.  It was run with out oil, so i am not sure what kinda conditions its in.  It will need to be sent to the machine shop!  I am doing mine in a week or two, so if you want it maybe we can send them both to the machine shop, than I can ship it to you.

a head run without oil is kind of a concern.  main thing there being that toyota didn't use cam bearings, the cam just rides directly in the cam journals.  that'd be the only way they could've improved on their valvetrain oiling system.

not wrong, but not correct eother... if the 22r was from an 85 or later, then it would swap with a 22re no problem, but the early pre85 22rs were much different... as others have said
