Marlin Clutch Okay for Mostly DD?
« on: Sep 23, 2010, 08:22:20 PM »
when you guys installed your Marlin clutch sets, was your pedal kinda softer than with other clutches?
did you notice that the clutch engages really far out on the pedal stroke, and that it didn't take much pedal to get it to shift?

before I ordered, I read that they were easy clutches, but it takes hardly any pedal to shift.  feels unlike any other clutch I've ever used.

umm not really. my clutch pedal engages right off the floor like it should. my old clutch (since it was going out) engaged when i barely pushed in the pedal. i didnt like that. mine is a daily driver and works perfectly. when i push in the pedal to the floor, it engages right in. my  :twocents:

I DD my 1,200# clutch, and it rocks in all situations.  Marlin designed it to be easy on the leg.

thanks for the feedback guys.

nimyad -- did you set your pedal height as standard Toy spec of 5-15mm of pedal free play?

I installed the Marlin flywheel, too, which I think has a higher step than stock.  I did notice that my existing one didn't have as much of a step.  not sure of the degree to which this would make a diff in pedal feel, but I think it would make the diaphragm fingers a little flatter, reducing the throw somewhat, right?

the other thing I noticed at first was that when I'd push the pedal in, there'd be a ticking sounds, but it's gone away after running it a little.  I'm wondering if the spring fingers were contacting the disc.

shouldn't need to since the system wasn't opened, but I'm going to try bleeding the hydraulics today.

it sounds to me like you installed the disc backwards.  there should be no ticking sound

It is a little stiffer than a stock clutch. but it is good.

It did engage in a different place, but that is to be expected since it was previously adjusted for the last clutch.  A simple adj and it felt back to normal for me.

I'm pretty sure the clutch disc is in properly.  I was holding it by the hub as I put the alignment tool through it and into the pilot bearing and flat against the flywheel.  the tick tick tick went away after playing with the clutch adjustment some shortly after the first run.

could just be in my mind that it doesn't feel like I remember; it's been a couple of months since I've driven the truck and have since changed DD vehicles, as well, also with a manual transmission.

seems to have a high engagement but lower release, if that makes any sense?

Yeah.  Most clutches are spongy vague bits.  These actually have an on/off point more like what you'd find in a car set up for weekend racing.  When I installed my heavy duty (non-ceramic) clutch, I thought it grabbed like a pit bull the first week or so since I was used to the work-out one and it seemed(rightfully so) to be a huge difference.  Plus most OEM clutches are a lot like OEM brakes and tires.  They are set to be as soft and inexpensive as they feel that they can reasonably get away with.

It's great.  This type/strength of clutch is usually found on a F150's manual gearbox or similar(ie - 300HP or so trucks and cars form the factory), so it's very hard to actually burn this one out short of really doing silly stuff off-road with the 22R/RE 4 cylinder's torque.

okay, yeah, that sounds like what I'm noticing and trying to describe.  it seems to have less of a meshy feel?  it's like there's not much feedback where you can feel it starting to engage.  it's like nothing nothing nothing, then it's grabbing, and the pedal's out.  but it doesn't feel full on on/off grabby like a Centerforce clutch I had.
