4X Inovations crossmembers are great and If you add a metal plate to the bottom thy make a great tranny/ transfer case skid, trust me lol

Small update. Got my front axle taken apart to put in the new brakes, but I forgot I needed to get the hubs turned down so the rotors will slide over :smack: Overall with family and stuff I didn't get as much done as I would have like to. Should start making progress in a couple weeks when finals are over :woohoo: Hoping to get everything done for a new years run at Johnson Valley

http://uscomposites.com/foam.html for those holes you wanna plug, expanding foam. It will fill any and every void where you pour it. Its the same stuff they use on mythbusters alot.

Thanks for the link! The only thing is you have to pour it in. Might be kind of hard for the area I'm trying to do. Have you used it before?

pu piece of cardboard under hole, tape it up, wait a sec after mixing for expanding to start, it gts thick, then pour, it WILL push through, but its supper easy to sand i down to exactly what you want. Theres a formul also to get real close to exact amount you need o pour. I have used expanding foam before yes, thats why im reccomending it for ths purpose

Thanks for the pics yeller  I drew something up in cad, just need to take some measurements to make sure it's the right size. I'll let you know if I still need your dimensions.

Looking for opinions. I'm running a rotated adapter with a t-case e-brake. What does everyone recommend for a crossmember? I don't want to run a fror style one and as can be seen I'm looking into a old 4xinnovations type mount. Looking into any and all options. Any input is appreciated

Finally got my fror tacoma brake kit and ifs hubs on. Here's a little how to on what I did.

The beginning is just basic tear down of a toyota axle.

Remove the outer hub dial

Remove the birf snap ring. I used pliers like these, highly recommend them.

Then take off the cone washers. I thread the nut to the end of the stud until it's flush, then use a "punch" to knock them loose. Hasn't failed me yet.

Take the hub body off next.

Then slide the hub off leaving the spindle.

Next install the brake mount provided in the kit. In the pic I left the dust shield on (even installed it that way) but you're supposed to leave it off

Installed.

Here are the ifs hubs. The OD needs to be machined down so the rotor can slip over. I didn't notice it at first, but the hubs I ended up getting were different. One was solid all the way around and the other had gaps in between the lugs. I don't think it makes a difference other than appearance.

I knocked out the races from my solid axle hubs and then reinstalled them on the ifs hubs. Make sure to use a brass drift when installing them.

Put in the inner bearing and install the seal, I was able to reuse since I had just put it on my other hubs.

Slide on the hub and install the outer wheel bearing. In the pic I don't have the dust shield on, it can be ran with or without it.

Set up the proper preload on the wheel bearings. I followed the fsm method of using a pull scale to measure drag and adjusting torque on bearing as needed. Then install the lock ring and outer nut.

Reinstall hub body and put the snap ring back on. I put anti-sieze on the cone washers too so they won't be hard to take off next time.

Then put on the outer dial and you're done

Here's a pic that shows the spacing of the ifs hub from the knuckle.

I ended up needing to get new wheel studs as well since with the rotor and wheel the stock ones aren't long enough.

EDIT: Used Dorman 610-192. Also needed new lugnuts since they are standard thread.

Hope this helps answer some questions others have about the swap. Overall it was pretty easy, no more difficult than rebuilding an axle. It took me a few days just because when I started I didn't have all the parts and I was busy with other things. I still have to put my front locker in, but it should be a breeze with the new setup :woohoo:

Also took apart my rear axles for rear disks, gonna need new wheel bearings. I was planning on using my old front rotors and calipers for the rear disks, but don't really like the setup. So I was thinking about doing this instead www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=969800  I've heard of people having problems with the 4 piston calipers in the rear. I also really like the slip on rotors, should make repairs that much easier.

so this is also moving the caliper to the front?

Yea, forgot to mention that  :smack: Directions say to swap knuckles, but because I have a 5th stud that wasn't going to work. I didn't want to cut off the old caliper ears either, so I moved the caliper mount to the front.

Well, started taking my front axle apart to pull the third so I can install my locker. Driver side was fine, but my passenger side didn't look so good...

Crappy pics I know. Water must have got in somehow. The axle seal is also leaking, doesn't make any sense. It basically has no miles on it and it's a marlin ecoseal too  I'm going to order my rear wheel bearings tomorrow, guess I'll have to mention this. Here's a pic of the seal itself. I don't see anything unusual.

If you haven't got your axle together by then.  You can borrow one.  Happy New Year bud.

I'll probably take you up on that Kevin. Not sure what's up with this axle, just hoping it's not bent.

I'm leaving to go back to school Monday, but maybe I can pick one up one weekend when I'm home.

Happy New Year to you too :beerchug:

Project Never Easy
« Reply #205 on: Mar 23, 2012, 08:55:51 PM »
Bit of an update. Sold off my old front rotors and calipers I was going to use for rear disks and bought some Montero Sport rear rotors and calipers. Almost have the rear disks done, just need to throw a couple more coats of paint on the brackets and bolt it all up.

I also started to put my interior back together finally. Figured out the used transmission I picked up a while back must be different from my old one because when I try to shift into 1st, 3rd or 5th it hits the dash/radio. Going to have to bend my shifter back I guess.

I'll try to get pics up tomorrow of everything.

Other than that I still need to figure out what's wrong with my front axle and build a new t-case crossmember. The list never ends  :hammerhead:

Oh, also thought of a new name for the build...Project Never Easy. Seems like everything I do is as never easy as it seems. Kinda cheesy, but oh well :talkingn:

Here's some pics of the rear disk setup. The caliper is just mocked up on the rotor, not actually bolted on.

I went out of town and didn't get pics before I left, but here they are

Here's a before and after of the interior

Before....  good looking half doors!

After

The frame after I sandblasted and painted it. Still not quite done though, have to put shock mount and box the frame.

Progress on the half doors

That's all the progress for now. Finally got some parts so those should be going on soon. Also looking for some tires bigger than the 31's I have now.

Progress  :gap:

Figured while everything was apart I might as well put in the new trunnion bearings I picked up a while back. Took out the housing to put in the new races, seems like it was the easiest way.

Also took out the leaky passenger side inner axle seal...

Must have installed it wrong, looks like the sealing ring is untouched and it popped right out  :_oops:

I picked up a new seal so hopefully it goes in right this time, don't know what happened before.
