In sunny komifornia you are issued two plates when you register your vehicle, if yours is missing go to DMV they will get you another or two new ones.
Gotta watch the cops these days, they will write up their own mother if it makes the state or county a buck.

yes in california it is mandatory to have two liscense plates, although my parents have been doing it for like 25 years and have only been hassled once. but make sure you pay that money, because when my parents forgot, it got all the way up to 750 dollars. but she was able to bring that back down to 25 bucks in traffic court hehe. like david said, just go to the DMV and they should issue you a new one. and i was gonna say truckee cops cuz they are arseholes but i guess it was CHP which is next in line...

WA is currently the same as well. But we are trying to push a petition through to prevent the need of one.

Legally you have to have one front and rear. Been ticketed many times for this and mud flaps.

fl only requires one... BUT consider this.... california and oregon I KNOW uses photo enforced traffic tickets... if they cant see your FRONT plate number, they just wasted there time and money both  on THAT ticket, and on the equipment used to catch you

California has always required 2 plates, cameras have nothing to do with it. AZ only requires one and they are more camera ticket than any state I know of. You can even get busted on the freeway for speeding or even the stoplight cams will get you for speed. In Phoenix you may start feeling like a star and the poperatise (sp) is chasing down the highway.

In Oregon, if you are missing a plate, and you go and get new ones.  Make sure you tell them that the old ones were destroyed.  If not, then it's like $125 for new plates.  If you tell them they were destroyed, it's only $55.  My buddy at the DMV told me this.  So, both my trucks I have, I've had to replace my "destroyed" plates.

I have been hassled for this many times by CHP. I have a front plate, I just keep it in my cab cuz its not bolted to my front bumper, just sits in my winch slot.

Last year, a meter maid in SF left me a no-front-plate ticket on my truck.   I had the plate on the dash.   :bull crap:

Not even operating the vehicle--that's hard up!

WOW that sucks!
here in TX you're supposed to have two..... I've been running w/ one rear for over two years and only been hassled once. i told him it fell of and was lost during a wheeling trip even though its under my passenger seat.

You may be able to get by without the front plate for a while (I did for a few years when we owned a Miata) -- but it gives the cops an excuse to pull you over if they're having a slow day or want to check you for other things.

your dash isnt properly secured to the vehicle.....

CA VC:

5200.  (a) When two license plates are issued by the department for use upon a vehicle, they shall be attached to the vehicle for which they were issued, one in the front and the other in the rear.

5201.  License plates shall at all times be securely fastened to the vehicle for which they are issued so as to prevent the plates from swinging, shall be mounted in a position so as to be clearly visible, and shall be maintained in a condition so as to be clearly legible. The rear license plate shall be mounted not less than 12 inches nor more than 60 inches from the ground, and the front license plate shall be mounted not more than 60 inches from the ground

And it ain't that safe to have on the dash.  In a rollover or an accident, it could do some damage.

About the traffic cam thing if you dont have a front plate and you run a red light im sure they can just look at one of the other cameras and get your rear plate.
