OK in Ca look up the 5200 sections of the vehicle code.  its all there.  two plates on most vehicles, mounted between 12 and 52 inches... some exceptions, sitting on the dash not OK, no plastic covering, etc. Don't forget to keep them clean too, if they cant be read from a distance, you can still get tagged.

Only a few states have single plates anymore; I think it's just PA, WY, NV and AK? As long as the plate's stuck to the front somehow you should be okay... got mine zip-tied. Some ricer guys have it stuck to the visor facing the windshield and seem to get away with that.

In Hawaii you have to put front and back license.

Stocker

As of September 2009, the following states require a license plate only on the rear bumper: Michigan, Kansas, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Delaware.

individual states make their own decisions as far as vehicles go for the most part. This is why some states have more stringent smog, registration, etc. laws than others.

fl only requires one... BUT consider this.... california and oregon I KNOW uses photo enforced traffic tickets... if they cant see your FRONT plate number, they just wasted there time and money both  on THAT ticket, and on the equipment used to catch you

Here in WA most of the red light cams take the photo of the rear of the car (had a few). I have only seen one that took it of the front but that was a mobile unit in Bonny Lake and its now gone.

it might not even be just for traffic cams, if every car has front plates it makes the chances of a car seen on camera creating a crime that much easier to catch

BoG-ToY

tell me this, if it ONLY takes a picture of the REAR, how can they prove who was driving? therefore how can they issue a ticket?
all I have to do is say, I wasnt driving it, but my keys were at home... so ANYONE COULDA TAKEN IT WITHOUT MY KNOWLAGE
Sand, what fun, drop pressure to 12psi, stock tires are still digging, can't afford to get stuck, 8psi, still not working. Find a place to GET OUT, air up, un-lock hubs,  WAIT whats this, hubs are UN-LOCKED already. 2wd, 8psi, stock tires, Oregon sand dunes.

Snowtoy

Here in CA running a red light is a driving infraction not a vehicle infraction that the registered owner is responsible for, such as a parking violation, so they have to be able to id both the driver and the car actually running the red light.  IIRC, there is supposed to be two pics taken, one from the front to get the plate w/the pic of the driver, and one from the rear depicting the vehicle w/visible plate numbers in the intersection w/a red light.  Absent clear photos of each they aren't supposed to issue a citation.

If you live in a state that only uses a rear pic and the citation is a point against your drivers license you should fight it, since w/o you admitting to it, it is impossible to prove that you were driving the car.
