Does anyone make a drop pitman?
« on: Feb 21, 2010, 05:49:02 PM »
My 4runner has the standard drop pitman for sas, I was wondering if anyone makes one with another inch or so more drop or if there is any OE applications that will work?
Mine is like this.

yeah you could also lose your life when your pitman arm snaps in half from the fatigue of heating and bending cast steel!  As far as i know, no companies make an arm that drops more than stock.  Usually about 99% of the time pitman arms with less drop are acuired so they dont come in contact with the leaf springs.  Your truck must be pretty tall?

Toyota Pitman arms are forged not cast as too are the stock steering arms at the knuckles, so in theory he would be ok, but yes he would shorten his throw.

4" lift in the front with 1 leaf removed. It is a tad taller than I like, so I am going to make some 1 inch shorter shackles. My issue is bumpsteer (or more accurately, it pulls under heavy braking cause the front is so soft and the drag link is angled.) On my YJ, the drag link was dead flat. Way better manners. Most people probably don't care but I do.
I want it to look like this.....

why dont you stand the box up and move it forward? or is there a specific reason why you want to have it sitting down like that pic?

i understand wanting to correct the bump steer issues.  Moving the box like Doof said may be your best way to get it where you want it

If you are a capable welder, I'd say make your own, since they are forged you can then weld to it safely. As with any of the solutions being discussed here, are you taking into consideration that lowing the arm may interfer with the compression of the leaf springs. Maybe adding a better shock would do you more good, sounds like you have a lot of break dive in the front end. A shock with more compression dampning may be a better and easier solution for you.

I've considered changing shocks because that is exactly the issue. I am running new Bilstein 5125's and I find them to be way soft, but everyone seems to use them. Maybe I should do some Pro Comp es3000's. They are lots stiffer. The nosedive under braking as well as the fact that I smack the bumpstops even on small bumps drives me nuts. I have a pretty standard setup so I can't be unique. Maybe I'm pickier than most, but fixing the minutia is what's fun.

That's just a pic of my old Jeep setup showing the parallel tie rod/drag link I wish I had. I'm sure I'll move my box forward at some point. I think Tacorunner has the best all around solution, it just blows having to buy new shocks to replace new shocks, but oh well.

I've never known ProComp to offer a monotube shock, typically they are similar to Rancho's have no rebound or compression. I would consider purchasing something like Fox or Sway-Away, or even a better Bilstein. Try Polyperformance, I know this is a more expensive way of fixing the problem but shocks are not just shocks, they have a purpose. You may even try adding another shock, just double up. Same length same size.

Wouldn't a stiff shock like a Rancho or Pro Comp help because they would compress slower?
I must admit I am a bit naive in this area.

Take a Rancho off the truck or Duestech or Pro Comp, if the shock does not expand all by its self, then it is just a piston in a tube with some oil in it. Fox, Bilstien, Sway Away, Edlebrocks all expand when you take them off your truck, thats cause they have a nitrogen charge in them. I know for a fact the old Duestechs and Ranchos dont, they are the worst shock on the planet as far as Im concerned.

I know from experience Procomp ES3000s do expand.  ES1000s do not.
