Hey everybody,

Chris here, working on my toyota outta Gilroy CA. I'm not really a mechanic, but I am sure gonna give it a go with a Toyota 4x4. So here's the plan for myself and my 1983 Toyota 4x4 longbed pickup. I already had a 1983 4x4 pickup that had a small lift, 529's with lockers, dual cases with 4.7's in the rear case, 35" tires, hy-steer with IFS steering box, rock sliders, new seats... For the front axle I got the knuckle ball gusset kit, axle gusset and diff armor. For the rear axle I got the diff armor as well. Random other parts that will go on too.

So I got a lot of the stuff I needed from my old(to me) toyota to put on the new(to me) toyota. A buddy of mine already helped me swap out the tranny/transfer case for the dual setup and newer tranny.

As it is right now, sitting in my buddies shop with the front axle out. Rebuilding the front axle currently and installing the lift, front spring drop hanger, IFS steering box with marlin's mount. Gotta burn on the knuckle ball gusset kit and the axle housing gusset and the diff armor. Got the 220v wired in by a buddy, got the 220 Hobart MIG welder with Argon. I am in the process of cleaning up the axle now and getting the front suspension dropped out and ready for new parts!

I have some pictures, but will have to post em up later. I'm sure that's for another thread though. :)

I figure I came to the right place for the info I need to get this project done.

I got a lot of my purchased items for the yota from marlincrawler.com  :turtle: anyways. I had seen his stickers on random trucks I've seen out and about. I goto Hollister Hills. I've been to the Rubicon, while a toyotathon was going on. I was acctually in a picture in one of the magazines from 2006 toyota-thon. I forgot which one though. I think it was a toyota-thon, when they drive through the rubicon. They had 2 nearly stock brand new FJ cruisers they were going through with. From the CA side to NV side I think. Anyways, we were posted up waiting in line (apparently this happens a lot on the Rubicon) and letting a huge group go by, the FJ cruiser's and their group. I was standin on a big rock and a land cruiser was going by and they snapped a shot with me in it... my only claim to fame :P I have the magazine somewhere's in my possession. However, I am pretty unorganized and dunno where it is at the moment.  :smack:

:beerchug:

So with I have been recently running around like a madman  :willynilly: trying to get everything organized for my build.... it has also been raining like crazy right now so painting is right out. :(

So my plans for this week and weekend are.

Remove all stock front suspension components.
Already for the Axle out.
Stock Steering box is unbolted, bracket removed.
Axle almost done with removing unneeded tabs/grinding clean.
Have the full re-build kit for the front axle from Marlin.

Install new front spring hanger, purchased from marlin.  :turtle:
Got the greaseable shackle bolts too :P  :turtle:
Install the small front lift springs from old toyota... not gonna clean them up, they are ugly. :P
Rebuild front Axle after welds.

Install rear chevy 63" springs, have the new hangers and shackles too.

I printed out the chevy 63" FAQ from pirates.4x4 and am gonna just use that info to install them. I am not doing the dual-shackle set up... well. I am kinda torn about that actually. I wonder if I should. I am using the Toyota as a CA street driveable off-road rig. So it's not gonna be the most gnarly wheeler, but it will be capable. So I was wondering if anyone has it set up, or has both set ups for the rear springs with and without dual-shackles. I am wondering about the ride quality. does the dual shackle set up make driving on the road harder? unsafer? less comfortable?

Anyways.. thats what I got for now. Lemme know your thoughts!

Cheers!

Got another question for the folks out there.

I got my 5.29 gears with lockers in them. Now I know they are both locked. I know one is a detroit. The teeth and how it all meshs together is gnarly. (remember, this is my first ever auto build anything) I have the other 3rd member with 5.29's and a locker, but it still has the pin through the middle of it. I was wondering if anyone knows by the description what exactly kind of locker it might be?

Thanks. Btw, I work for Geek Squad. :P makes this whole thing even more hilarious... working on a toyota, not a computer.

Cheers!  :beerchug:
