ok, i got it figured out, it was the batteries, put a new one in today and no problems, the batteries are still good they will hold a charge but they just wont work for this application i guess. i took both batteries and hooked them up to a spotlight for over 30 minutes and they both seperately hold over 12 volts, oh well ill keep them as spares for other vehicles..... thanks to everyone for their help, best board ever.... and im goin to check into that event id love to go....thanks again

Glad you got it worked out!  It was suggested to you to load test the batteries, which is just like trying to start the truck or run accessories.  Take those batteries to the recycler and run away with the money, don't let them leave you stranded cause they will  ;)

And I would seriously consider switching to a high output 1 wire gm alternator too.  Dual alts is totally not necessary when you can achieve better results with 1 very simple, easily sourced and replaced alternator

yes soon i will upgrade to a new alternator, i found one that is 130 amp for 89.95 with 19.95 shipping with no core charge, and a 1 year warranty, that bolts right up, no modification, factory replacement.

Ya I would stay away from the dual alternators if it were me. An upgraded alternator and an isolator and two GOOD batteries would be a better, no hassle setup. Remember, a 130, 150 whatever amp alternator doesnt put out that amperage all the time. It simply has that capability.....as needed just like a 400hp 68 Mustang Fastback wont be putting out 400hp cruising down the road at 15mph. Bigger(amperage) can never be bad.(thats what she said)

If you do dual alternators I would wire the lights through a relay of course but also have that same relay trigger another relay to excite the alternator as well if you are not going 1wire. I could see me kicking on the lights and forgetting to do the same for the alternator.

That doesn`t mater, its the same alternator thats in you 86, it will bolt in and the plugs (wiring) are the same. I plan on buying one for my 86 4Runner soon.

your thinking too hard, its much simpler than that :therethere:  it can share the same battery/batteries,  just hook the excitor wire to a switch on the dash

so dont knock it till youve done it.

cost of my dual alternator setup FREE from parts i had laying around

how much for a 150 amp alternator??  most START at $1 per amp

I like the idea of 2 alternators.

If 1 goes south, you still have 1 charging.............

No, but you can always upgrade to the newer style alternator, it has a higher output and you can eliminate the external voltage regulator.

i still like the idea of having two alternators myself, and where the ac pump used to sit is a perfect place i could just mount it solid and use the tensioner to tighten the belt, just have to make a bracket, and just wire it up seperate of the factory system and you wouldnt have to use and isolator and just run the winch and lights off of that system, lots of options, i think it just a matter of opinion or what best suits your needs, cause any of it would work, just my two cents......
