L-series to G-series tranny questions!?!?!
« on: Dec 21, 2009, 12:50:34 PM »
I have got an 82 toy pickup with a stock tranny and a MC05 dual case setup.  I recently had the tranny go out on me and i have already picked up a new one. Now here is the trouble... the tranny that I blew up was either a L50 or L52 and the tranny I picked up is either a G52 or G54, So it has got the forward shift for the t-case. Is this going to be a problem?? It seems to me that the G-series tranny is about 5" longer that the L-series, so that is going to give me crossmember issues and maybe driveline length issues.....but what about the fact that the G-series has got the t-case shifter in it.  Can i simply use one of marlins shifter block-off plates and just bolt my MC05 and t-case right to it? I was really hoping for an easy swap....what have i gotten myself into?! Also, is there any markings on these trannys to tell me exactly which model I am dealing with?

unfortunately the L50/52's where a short design, a G52/54 with be 6 inches longer, they require the crossmember to be moved and the front drive shaft lengthened and the rear shaft shortened

what I would suggest is getting a rebuilt L52 from Marlin, direct bolt in

i  put a g52 in my 80 toy. i used drive lines from  an 84-88 the front worked but for the rear i had to move the axle back about an inch with a relocation plate (temp fix until duals go in and DL get shortend). as for the t-case im about 98% sure a top shift case will bolt to a forward shift tranny and work fine. some of the older t case inputs had strange splines towrd the back of the regular splines wich can just be ground down to fit.thats my :twocents:
