clutch questions: turbo flywheel on a g series tranny
« on: Jul 11, 2005, 05:40:10 AM »
in the coming weeks, I'll be swapping a 22rte into my 84 4runner, which I have already converted to 1987 RE fuel injecton last year. The previous owner knew a good bit about toyotas and had the G52 rebuilt as a G54. he said it was "shipped from out west" so it's possible it came from Marlin, but whow knows?

the 22rte I have came from a 4runner, so it had a flexplate attached to the back of it.

what's the right course of action for a clutch here?
do I use a 22R flywheel for the G54? will it be balanced properly for the 22rte?
do I use the 22rte flywheel and associated larger clutch? will it fit in the g-series bellhousing and the g-series input shaft?

thanks in advance for any help here.

every R series engine i've seen is internally balanced.  that said you can use the turbo flywheel and clutch disk as long as the spline count and shaft diameter are the same on the G tranny(i'm 95% sure they are).  another upgrade is to just get a flywheel from a '92-up or so 22R as they have a larger clutch as well.

if you have a standard 22r clutch and flywheel you can bolt it right up, the stock turbo flywheel and clutch assy is bigger then the standard 22r-22re  the turbo make more hp so a bigger culth was used, you will be ok if you use the regular clutch, but it will not hold as well as the stock turbo  one, unless you get a heavier duty pressure plate like the one marlin sells i think its a 1600 lbs one more thing when you take the flex plate off, get ride of the bolts and the small spacer ont he back of the crank shaft, and use the bolts from the old engine the throw out bearing is the same as well
