Hey guys, I am tossing around the idea of putting 80 series axles with a 3 and 4 link setup under my 4runner.  I am interested in the pros and cons of running these axles vs mini truck axles.  I know the 80 series are alot wider and have bigger birfs and a hi pinion, plus the rear is disk brake and full float. How I look at it those are all benefits.  My main concern is getting a true high steer setup on the front that will handle 40" tires and hydro assist.  Post up what you guys know about it and any info you might have on the high steer situation! Thanks alot! :yesnod:

they are the :pokinit:. only down side is the steering, but billybob in that link is in the procces of making an intirely new knuckle arm set-up. most people have trouble breaking stock birfs with 40" tires. hope you have 16s or bigger

I was hoping you would jump in with some info Steve!  what are you currently running for steering?  I have 17x9 2.5 BS wheels on my rig right now, so they will work just fine

I just bought an FZJ80 FF Rear Axle to put under my Runner, and I am debating about putting in an FZJ80 front or an FJ62 front.  The best of both worlds might be the 62 center and the 80 knuckle balls.  I got a 62 housing for $75 so I might start by getting it turned and widened to 63" and use my current hi steer arms.  I've been batting around the idea of using 100 series rear thirds and getting custom made 32 spline inner axle shafts that have the wider OD.  Those thirds now have 4.88 R&Ps available.  For me, the regular 30 spline inners with the standard OD should be strong enough.  Steve do you have 80 series Longs?  Are they 24 spline between the birf and inner axle?  Love to see what Billybob13 is working on and I hope it's a good option for leaf sprung and non-full-hydro vehicles.

For the rear, I have tested 15" black rock crawlers over the calipers, and some grinding will be necessary.  I like the idea of getting the big drotors for better stopping and better e-brake options.  The FF axles will be nice for strength and ease of repairs.

i run full hydro with a stock driverside arms, one is from a right hand drive. with arp studs, works great.
i have 5.29s front and rear. the rear is welded but i do have a e-locker for it. ihave longs up front, they are chromoly, but stock spline. they will both take anything you can put in there way. the front calipers fit with alot of grinding however the rear brake from the newer models have huge rotors and calipers. so i ended up using some front rotors and gm calipers. once he makes the knuckles for these they will be a no brainer. i would eventually like to get a ruffstuff housing with a 9.5 front diff and the 80 outers

Steve,

You running the FZJ or FJ axles?  I am assuming they're the 1993-1997 gear.  Where you get the RHD arm?

What wheels -- 17"?  Can't believe the Calipers have to be ground with 17"ers unless they're some thick aluminum style.

I wont be stepping up to 80's any time soon, but I am greatly looking forward to what BillyBob is working on and plan on stepping up to 80's and not worrying about a thing. From my understanding they turn better then the mini axles too :D

i have seen that a couple times.  what I am really looking for is a way to get the tie rod and drag link above the springs.  In my case I will be running links and air shocks so I mainly want to be able to get the tie rod above the third member.

i was told not to use slee's high steer, apparently it breaks pretty easy.  plus i'm not gonna spend 800 bucks just for the arms!

And that doesn't include the spacers needed to double shear them.
I'm pretty loose with your money though.   :sly:

Apparently OTT no longer offers their kit. They have been out of stock for quite some time, like 2 years.

yeah i know, you still have to buy tie rod and drag link tube and the spacers. End result, you are lookin at like a one G for steering!  thats rediculous!  yeah I noticed you dont really care about my budget  ha ha

Not to throw cold water on your desire for an FZJ front axle, but have you considered going with a widened 60 series axle for the 9.5" diff, and just run 30 Spline Longs, knuckle ball gusseting, etc. so you can use your current Hi-Steer components?  Of course, the plan will have to work for you, and if you have already broken mini-style Longs or anticipate doing so with 40s, then forget the idea, but I am more pulled in the direction of going with the 60 series front axle with the stronger 9.5" diff and keeping my Longs and MC 25mm Hi-Steer for a wider front axle.  The big plus for my overall plan will be the disk/rotor FF rear axle with the 9.5" rear diff.  With my 37s, I can't think this set up will be less than adequate, but I am sure to miss my HP 8" front diff.

Maybe in the future, I'd get the 80 series outers with whatever knuckle options that come out, but it's hard to wait.  Shoot!  Ruff Stuff still hasn't released his mini knuckle balls; eventhough, the release was projected for a year ago.  I know it's not Dan's fault, but his delay seems to typify what happens with manufacturing timelines for aftermarket parts like this.  I've got my fingers crossed for BillyBob13s knuckles of course.

Another option, which is also very expensive would be to run 9.5" diffs broached to 35 spline, while using the same drive flanges for the rear and custom 35 spline inner axles, and Dana 60 outers, such as SpyderTrax Pro Series 60 Knuckles for the front.  Might as well go with 300M, too.  I'd bet that Brian Ellinger could begin all of this for you next week.  Can you tell that I am trying to be carefull with your money, too?

I have considered the option of fj60 front also.  But I really want a HP front third and the bigger birfs.  I think that the steering issue can be overcome with a bit of design and fab time.   I have a lead on a pair of 80 series axles, so hopefully I will find out the price next week and see what I can put together.

have you considered this?   from pirate, guy making his own new knuckle for the 80 axle

it is a new option and don't belive it is 100% available yet.

i know i'm not supposed to pimp my product on this site so if this needs to be deleted by a mod i understand. i'm heading out to KOH tomorrow morning for some further testing on these new knuckles and arms. yes, this is taking way longer than i expected, but it's all worth it since improvements were made as the delays happened. i won't say too much about it right now but here's how it looks on a leaf sprung first gen.

i'm in love with the 80 series axles. they're the best way to gain strength and width while staying toyota.

hey William, glad to see you got a marlin account.  im the guy in south dakota, I sent you an email over the weekend about your steering kits.  its great to see a pic of it on a rig. cant wait to see how the testing turns out from KOH!
