Whining in my transmission
« on: Dec 21, 2009, 04:05:47 AM »
Hi guys, I am guessing that my bearings and syncs are probably going out but I'd like to get a couple opinions before I pull it out. I bought this transmission used a few years back and it is still very tight, but a few days ago I noticed a whining noise in 3rd 4th and 5th. It only makes the noise while under acceleration. It's mostly like a whining noise with a hint of a metal grinding noise if I barely feather the throttle.. I have done nothing strenuous with my truck lately it just came out of the blue, but in the past couple days it has gotten a little bit louder.. Any ideas?? Need new bearings? Syncs? Thanks for any help/ info. Oh and I believe it is a G52.

Does it shift good? Or slip alot? I would say its bearings. Try changing the fluid and see if it has any metal in it and if it helps.
If you see it, its for sale.

Ya it shifts excellent. The shifter is very smooth and tight. I'll go down in a lil and check the oil but I don't see why it wouldn't have any. I changed it about a year ago and she doesn't leak..

My l50 in my 81 has made noise since the day I got it, 3 years ago, matter of fact, thats the only original part let on my truck. Mine makes noise in 5th, and will get a bit louder when you let off the gas. Kinda sounds like balls rollin around in there, so I assume its bearings. Im just gonna rock it till the wheels fall off, then go to a w56. They are cheap, and you can get a crossmember from budbuilt, and use it with ubolts on the frame to mount it.

Ya but mine just started making noise.. Or else I've just never noticed it before which is pretty hard to believe because I notice everything that's abnormal on my truck.. So the transmission had about a gallon if not a little more of relatively clean oil in it with a bit of metal shavings on the magnetic drain plug and the transfer case was a bit low and had about half gallon of oil that looked really good....  ???

I would think the oils should look the same in both the tranny and tcase, mine always has. Im 99% sure they share fluid constantly

I thought they shared fluid too but there was a bit of a difference in the consistency and clarity between the oil in the two.. ???

The transfer and the tranny don't share oil.

The tranny will get dirtier because of the syncros (no syncros in transfer), then the tranny really gets dirty oil when the bearings are going out.

Thanks for the info! Sooo do you all think it's most likely my bearings going out?? However if it was the bearings wouldn't it be making the noise in all the gears??

Normally 4th would be the quietest.    (no load on the countershaft).

Take the interior boot off so you have a hole in the floor and then listen.

That will tell you how bad the tranny is..............
