Harbor Freight........

I have an 8000lb Chicago Electric.      Has the same specs and looks identical to a 'big-name'  brand

(had it for a couple of years, and forgot which 'big-name'.........)

Just doesn't have the warranty of the 'big-name'............

the 9.5 T.I   that i have has been very good to me in tme of need. and the 15,000# from waren has been good on my full size also.  waren is name brand and quality to.      you get what you pay for in the whinch area.
i love oregon wheelin.

I recommend Superwinch, better solenoids than the competition and they're submersible. More reliable, better construction IMO.

I've worked with a lot of the guys that used to do the Camel Trophy expeditions and they said if they had to winch, they wouldn't use the vehicles that had other brands because they would fail. I have 2 different models, and they work awesome.

Check out the EPi9.0s on this link http://winchline.com/winch.htm Its a pretty good deal, and it comes with synthetic line. Not to mention Jon & Thor at Winchline.com are super good guys.

I've concidered the xrc8, or whichever one it is that comes with nylon (or whatever it is) rather than cable.  It's just too damn easy to let a winch cable bind or spool up wrong and pinch.  I dealt with larger winch cables for many years (mostly 5/8 and 3/4) and it's just too easy to kink in the heat of the moment.

alot of the probs people have is maintance on them.  they need that from time to time also like the rigs we drive.
so take that in to consideration also. you treat it like :pokinit: then it will let you down in the wrong time.

fade

I'm running a harbor freight 8000# its worked great the 20 times I've needed it 3 times for me being stuck 10 for others and just random other things. I pulled a motor out of a car with it once and chained my truck to a buddys truck pushed on both rigs breaks and winched out a stump. I have just renctly had to replace the sylinolid. for $300 I can't complain but theres alot better out there. They work good just on long pulls they heat up and a 30' pull can take you about 10 mins or more in my experence.

My next one will be a warn or ramsey. Always remember you get what you pay for. Look for a used one on cl and check it out test it on your rig or the guys to tow your truck up a incline if the winch has no problems I'm sure they guy wouldnt mind spending 10 mins showing you it works for some money.

Just my .02 sorry to rambel I'm kinda buzzed.

Ive never dealt with synthetic line but i hear thats the way to go.

Steel wire cable is my friend, as is chain over straps. I have made a living off of them and never, ever had a failure period and I've winched some big stuff over the years. I will say that straps have their place and I do carry them but rocks are not forgiving and will cut through strap and line very quickly compared to steel. The best way to make sure you have top notch equipment is to not only service it regularly but to replace the cable, chain and straps yearly. The chain not so much if you don't use it but steel wire rusts, synthetic ages as does a strap.

Do not get one of the cheaper models that uses "permanent"(sic) magnets in it.  They will crack and fail over time(since everything is made in China now - sigh) and leave you with a huge headache as opposed to the slightly more expensive wound type.  http://www.autoanything.com/winches/50A27A165A1.aspx This is a good basic primer.

Dang, I think they're advertising that for $100 less in the flyer in their magazine!  In the same issue they have the warn m8000 for $540, which I think I'd rather buy than the smitty.

that link is regular price and it is the "comp" version, whatever i'd still buy the warn for that price. But for the 285 bucks that cheap model smitty didnt look bad
