couple of 3rz questions
« on: Nov 23, 2009, 03:23:20 PM »
Well, I've read through the 3rz thread, but couldn't find the exact answer I need.  I've found a 3rz from a prerunner, complete w/ harness, gauges, ecu, 2wd auto tranny, etc.  It comes w/ a w59 bellhousing so I can use that to mate up to my W-56 tranny, and then come the questions.

Has anyone found a way of tricking the computer to avoid the issues that come up when running an auto ECU w/ a 5speed tranny?

If not, what are the exact issues I'd have?

Would the engine still run properly, but throw codes?

If I can't use the auto ECU, are the harnesses the same between manual and auto ECUs, so that I could pick up a 5-speed computer and still use it w/ the auto engine/dash harness?

Thanks in advance to everyone... :beerchug:

It is talked about in the 3rz knowledge thread. As far as it says NO. ECU's are cheap to be had and for 50-100 bucks save yourself!

The problem is "Lock-out Torque convertor circuit and the three shift solenoids (A, B, and C) circuits from the Automatic ECU" ENJOY!
If you see it, its for sale.

how about using the auto engine harness w/ a manual ECU?  is that okay?  any mods to the engine to accept manual pilot bearing, manual tranny bellhousing, etc?

Well, I've read through the 3rz thread

haha, yeah.  I found some of the info I was after, but the ECU question was my main concern.  there are alot of options listed in there, but not sure which to take and which to leave.  someone posted that you could use a 2rz computer for any year 3rz.  is that true?  is the ECU from a coil on plug engine the same as one from a distributor type engine?

I just finished my 3rz swap in my '84 using a '99 3rz out of an auto prerunner bolted to the stock G52 5spd. I've put about 1000 miles on it so far with the automatic ECU and it runs perfect. The check engine light is on, and it has the codes for the shift solenoids, but it doesn't seem to affect the way it runs at all. I'll swap to a 5spd ECU whenever I come across one, but for now I'm gonna keep running it with the auto ECU. It has a ton of power and is getting 20mpg with 35"s and 5.29s. Can't complain with that.

As far as I know there is no way to trick the CEL from being on with the auto ECU. Will it run with it? Mine does, and I have no codes other than the shift solenoids, and no issues with the way it runs using the auto ECU.

would that ECU work on an '03 engine w/ coil on plug ignition?
