Topic: I AM STUMPED!!

Ok, I have had an ongoing problem for a while now with my 85 toy w a 22r and 20r head. And its with my truck overheating. So here is the parts replacement list. I have replaced the radiator and its a 3 core now. Has an electric fan. I bought a toyota thermostat and it was still overheating and once it got to like 225 degrees it would just push all the coolant out of the overflow. So I took the thermostat out and it runs as cool as can be. But it doesnt get to operating temperature. So that just wont be suffice. So today I made sure the thermostat was opening correctly and sure enough right at 190 degrees it opened(I did a kitchen test). So I went and bought a new water pump cuz I am unsure how old this one was. And I put everything back in. And I burped it for approx 15-20 mins w heater on and the front of the truck jacked up. After a while it started pushing all kinds of air out, and I kept an eye on my temp and finally it got to 220 degrees and it was still pumping out air. I shut it off and waited a little and did it again, and it got to that temp again and still had air coming out. So I decided to cap it and drive it for a bit, well in a matter of seconds my temp was at 225 and it was pushing all the coolant out of the over flow again. I have no idea what to do. Everything on the cooling system is brand new. Do I need to continue burping it? I have no idea where all this air is coming from. But maybe later today I will try again. Any ideas would greatly help.

Im gonna say blown head gasket. Thats where the air is comming from.

Head gaskets are easy tho... Pretty cheap also.

i dont think i have any symptoms of a blown head gasket. and its never been ran long enough at a high temperature. it doesnt smoke and im not getting anything in the coolant or in the oil. help me out with the symptoms of a blown hg please.

if i dont have the t stat in, it runs great and stays way cool even if i drive it for hours on end it will stay pretty cool. but as soon as i put the t stat in, its nothing but probs

Do a cyl leak down test i bet u come up with a low cyl.

yes, the spring goes in the manifold side, correct?

ya the yotatech sounds just like mine, too bad there wasnt a solution and its too bad that thread is almost 3 years old. but yes same as me. i cant figure it out. and i dont want to run w/out a t stat either

Sorry I missed the electric fan in first post.  That was my first instinct, since I had this very same problems with a Nissan and it was the clutch fan.  Pulled the t-stat and ran it that way till I sold it.  Just didn't have heat.


Then I would lean towards HG then.  If everything else is new.  Leak down test would definitely tell ya.  Get your cooling system pressure tested too!

ya i guess i will check all those things. its weird though because this motor is pretty much brand new. i just dropped it in maybe 2k ago.

do you have a white colored build up visable when you take your rad cap off? or exessive water comin out the tailpipe? all symptoms. most small shops will check if its blown for like 20 cash if you ask. best way of knowing is the tester they have! possilby heater core is backed up also. heat work?? might need a cleaning. could also try to force flush your entire coolant system knock it loose!
