84 rear gears im stumped
« on: Oct 23, 2006, 10:46:20 AM »
Ok, my friend just gave me a set of donor axles from an 84(we think).
My question is what gears are inside? I was thinkin 4.10:1, but, just for the heck of it we stuck a mark on the top center of the hub, as well as one drive flange, spun the drive side 4-1/2 times(actually a little touch more) to make the wheel go a full rotation.
is it a 4.56:1? i just wanna be sure.
Thanks.
 Johnny

If they are open differentials and installed on the the truck roll it forward or backwards on the ground to determine the gearing.

It should be 4.10 gears stock, but they could have been changed.  :dunno:

if spinning just one tire,  you need to rotate  the pinion  till the one tire has turned 2 times  then divide  the  number by 2

I am more of a jeep guy so on mine they are actualy stamped right on the ring gear but that just involves taking off the back diff plate on a d30 or d35.  But for you guys the drop- in has to come out which takes a little more time.  That is the only true way if I am not mistaken????

If you pull the third out count the ring and pinion then divide the ring gear by the pinion and you will have the gear ratio. A lot of work to determine you have a 4.10 ring gear.
If you still have control you aren't going fast enough

just my 2 cents but if he is talking he is not sure if it is 410 or 456 that could make a difference if you dont have the match up front.  You cant run that big of a different ratio without messing something up can you?

1. place axle(or truck) on ground.
2. push and count pinion rotations.
3. enjoy knowing your gear ratio.

that is all.

Could be 4:30's..... :headscratch:

thats my guess to If the donor truck was an auto its more than likley 4.30s, and if five speed 4.10. Even after doing the tire spin thing on my frinds auto 85 runner I thought it had 4.10s becouse it was gutless.

i got both axles actually, front AND rear.
came from an 84 ( i think, no doors)
had a -get this, a 4 speed tranny. like i said though, 4 and 1/2 & a bit more rotations of the driveshaft flange produced 1 full rotation of the wheel, basically my question is are them there gears stockers? because i was under the impression that ALL manual trannys were 4.1:1.
I havent openend um up yet either, i wanna keep all the internals clean and rust free untill i have all the parts for the axle rebuild, first i want to sandblst them and paint, is the sandblasting a bad idea (all seals WILL be replaced on completion).
If its 4.56, great, ill run those w/ 33s for a while , but 4.10s aint gonna cut it.
