So I had been looking for another Toyota to build. Had a budget of $2000 to spend on the rig so I wanted to find one that was stock and unmolested. So I had been browsing Craigslist for some time and noticed this 79 Toyota for $1200. Looked at the pictures and looked clean. Called the guy and he said that it needed a battery and he thought a coil and igniter cause he said it had no spark. I offered him a $1000 and said ill bring my trailer.

Went there couple days later and was pissing rain. I through a battery in it just to make sure it had compression. All was good. I used the starter and drove it up on the trailer. Made the deal and headed home with the new toy.

So With the truck home I had to get it running. I didn't even bother seeing if had spark or not. I wired in a more common 81-83 coil and igniter and still got nothing. Then I noticed the fuel filter was empty and pointing the wrong way. So I sprayed some ether in the carb and it ran. Now knowing I had a fuel issue I dropped the tank and pulled the fuel pump. One of the rubber lines on the pump had fallen off. I put it back on, put a clamp on it, reinstalled the tank and new fuel filter. Bam truck runs awesome!

To date I've changed the fuel filter, plugs, cap, rotor, exhaust manifold gasket, and installed some 4runner buckets and an ammo can for a center console. Also had to replace the rear slider since one of the windows was broken.

Specs on the truck. It's a 79 longbed, with a 20r and 4speed non powersteering. It did come with an old school 3" lift(I think rough country), black steelies, and 32" at's. The truck has 141xxx miles and runs like a top. It doesnt leak, or burn any oil. I adjusted the valves and while doing so looked down into the timing chain to see if the guides were wearing or feel the chain for slack. Feels great and doesnt make a sound so Im hesitant on changing it at the moment. The exhaust is bone ass stock and original from 79! Can not believe the shape its in. The truck is super quiet and have gone through multiple drives thru's and people compliment me on how quiet the truck is for its age.

So right now I have a complete marlin hi-steer. I already hunted down and purchased the ps compents. Im waiting to order my longfields, gears, locker and knuckle service before doing the histeer. This truck will be Marlin built with a few things from Front Range also. Plans right now are Aussie's front and rear w/ 5.29's. Marlin suspension, and duals. Gonna keep the duals stock in both cases. Going to buy Marlins cage and build the rest of the bumpers and sliders.

The truck is straight and clean and I plan to keep it that way. Here in Washington our terrain can and will destroy a trucks body. Im going to be more cautious of the lines I take. I hope to have the truck down in California this summer and do the Rubicon. But my reason for not wanting to destroy it is because these trucks are a classic and why destroy it. Also if the trails do close; at the end of the day I can still drive it on the street.

So stayed tuned. Parts will be rolling in shortly and this build will be going. I need it done before the snow hits here....which is soon :shocking:

Included some pictures of when I picked it up, pulling the bench and nasty vinyl floor . Then some playing in the private woods/trails I have access to 3 miles from home

  good call

btw, if you can find a good 22r exhaust manifold and the twin down tubes that go past the firewall,  this would be a HUGE improvement over the stock 20R exhaust

If I were to modify the exhaust I would just buy a header and go from there. The stock exhaust is mint, doesn't leak, and is super quiet. I dont need power, my Duramax handles those needs.

You got a good deal on that truck there Skinny!

Good to see your doing well.  I used to see ya on NWWheelers, but I had to scale back the amount of computer time I was doing when I went to days!  And NWW was one of them that had to go to the side of the road.  :(  I miss the Karl episodes.  :rofl2:

Oh, I'm still in the woods when I can.  Especially, with the new tires and wheels I just bought from Kyota, just before the roundup.   But, at the moment I have been slowly gathering parts for my sas.  I just got in the knuckle rebuild kit, which everybody has been out of them since before March.  So, I would order one from Marlin before they run out of them again.   :yesnod:

Not a lot has happened. But after been out wheeling a few times and exploring by myself. I came to the conclusion I really need to get my winch on; cause the hi-lift only goes so far! I got in touch with my buddy Dan and had him build me a bumper. I didn't want the traditional Marlin/ Trail-Gear style bumper. So I gave Dan an idea and he rolled with it. We got the winch to sit nice and tight to the body. I have to get some nice led's to replace the factory blinkers. Then get a new fairlead...the mount is already there.
