front axle spring perch question
« on: Sep 18, 2009, 10:23:07 PM »
Hello all,

I have a question. I recently purchased a '84 front axle for my '87 4runner project.. The previous owner had cut off all the spring perches... is there a procedure to align new perches...does anyone sell perches with templates or jigs? and arer rear spring perches interchangable with the front?..any help is appreciatedthanks!

them rear spring perches should work with the front, they are the same axle tube diameter, on the placement, i dont know what to tell u, except to measure someone elses axle for the exact spots to weld yours back on.

if you ever plan on angling the pinion up torwards the t/case now is the time to do that. while the perches are off.  just somthing to think about. :headscratch:   just my :twocents:

Someone on here can probably get the measurements, or you can find another SA yota and do it yourself.  If you get all the measurements and mark it, pretty much any welding shop can weld it for you.

If you bring it by my shop I can weld them on for ya.  I would set them at a 5 degree clock.  It will make the pinion angle very low.  I should be there all weekend working on my rig. 925-270-5314 Josh

East Bay Frame and Axle in San Leandro is awesome for that sort of thing.

The tricky thing is going to be notching the pass side perch to sit half on the diff.

Getting the drivers side to sit 1/4" lower then pass side is the biggest pain to me.  Guess thats what they make grinders for.

if it was me i would hang it loosely under the springs with the ubolts just tight enough to keep it from flopping around

get the drivers side mounted and then you'll have a good way of getting the pass side mounted at the same angle

but thats just me :gap:

thanks again to all that replied. Will angling my pinion upwards affect my caster angle? I think I might be going with a high pinion in the near future and I currently have dual cases, so maybe leave the perches at stock position?

Trying to rotate the pinion by moving the spring pads is fine for a rear axle but I wouldn't do that on a front.  The correct way to change your pinion angle on the front is to cut and turn the balls.

but re-aligning the perches is secondary too? right? or it will depend on how much degree of angle that will be made?

Right, if you cut and turn the balls you will have to re-do the spring perches, but just doing the perches without turning the balls is not good.
