« on: May 28, 2009, 10:59:34 PM »
im getting about 220 to 250 miles from full to when the needle hits the e.  is there more gas at reserve that i dont know about?
kind sucks for a 4 banger, my 2007 tundra got 18 miles per gallon average.

think it is running rich, whats the norm for a 85 efi 22re?

I have an 87 4Runner that had a stock 22RE, 5 speed, 5.29's with 35's. I was getting 18-20 mpg or 220-250 mpt (miles per tank).

I just swapt in an LC cam & LC header & I'm still getting 18-20 mpg.

My 4Runner has an idiot light that comes on & I have taken it till the engine is cutting out due to no fuel, roughly about 35 miles left so you better find a gas station fast.

Here are some other threads about mpg that have been started.

This is suspiciously like the multiple gas mileage threads which already exist  :headscratch:

Does the 17.9mpg account for the 10.7% difference in 31's over the 28's, or have you swapped in a 4.56 gears?

Running a manual or auto, is the mileage city, highway, or combined?

When was the last tune-up, valve adjustment, total mileage on the engine, your driving style, any extra weight gear/tools you carry?  All of these things will reduce your mpg from oem specs.

well, i just got done with a timming chain, valves are re adjusted, no extra weight, interrior is stripped, stock otherwise.  i do drive alot, probably faster than i should, but these trucks dont drive to well above 70 mph anyways so i keep it 65 to 70 most of the time freeway.

87 4Runner with 235/75-15 tires and new header and exhaust, in good running shape...  The low fuel light comes on at almost exactly 270-275 miles and I've pushed it to 300 *once* and it was starting to get a little fuel starved.  This is for normal city/highway driving to work and back.

I have noticed that there's a huge difference in economy past 60mph, where the stock gearing seems to be set up in 5th gear to provide the best mpg versus speed.  Trundling down the highway at 60mph, using the occasional semi to get about 100ft behind on a long road trip has gotten me over 300 miles before the low fuel light came on.

One thing I did note, though - putting mud terrains on it did suck about 4mpg(about 1mpg per tire near as I can figure due to losses from friction) out of it right off.  Street slicks in theory, plus keeping the skirts would give you an easy 24-25mpg highway which the 2wd trucks were rated at.  My truck which has MTs and no skirts, which is common for pretty much every old truck nowadays, gets 6mpg worse highway than new, or roughly 18 city/18highway.

Nope, low fuel lights came in 86 & up. You can swap an 86 & up sending unit in to the 85 tank but the connector is different, it has an extra wire for the light.

Really?  I have a Fuel Light in my instrument panel that's never worked. ('83 mini)  I always assumed it was for a low fuel light but was broken.   (Now this fuel light has never lit, and I can only barely make out the outline when the sun hits the dash panel juuuust right..)  Now I'm curious if their is actually a fuel light there or if I'm crazy.

My 83 had a spot for a light too but it never worked. That might've been an option that wasn't offered in the US.

I just went through this on my 87 4Runner, I put a fuel tank in off an 85 4Runner & found that the level sensor only had a 2 wire plug & my 4Runner had a 3 wire plug. 3rd wire is for the light.

If you live in caly or the reno area you will be using oxygenated and ethanol gas, it also effects your milage bout 7-10% . iused to run a buggy out at blackrock and the mpt was always better runnin gerlach gas. and my buggy ran much quicker. no bull

I've got an 85 22re runner, 31 at's with the 5sp, had 4.30's in the rear end and got a consistent 20mpgs, went all the way to 300 miles on a tank once. Went to 4.10's and gas mileage immediately dropped to 16-17. Now I'm back to 4.30's and getting 20mpg...
