I'm planning on doing this to mine.  I plan on popping the rear window out, and then going straight down from the sides of the window opening.  I'm going to cover the edges of the cab with the same trim material that the edges of the door are trimmed with.  I've got a 3rd gen xcab that has the boxes under the rear seat, I want to keep those, and keep the bed lever with the top of those boxes, so we'll see :crossed:

The stock seats are going to be bolted into the front of the bed, with the leg space being the xcab area.  I want to connect the cab to the bed, don't want people in the backseats dropping stuff down the crack, or getting a hand or foot caught in there.  I plan on welding some heavier guage sheet metal on the floor of the bed, extending into the cab to cover that gap.  I'm also putting an interior cage in the cab, that extends into a cage in the bed to protect the rear passengers.  I'm going to brace the sides of the bed against the cage, as cutting out the front wall will make the bed flimsy.

I am considering doing this on my 82 build up. Sounds like we all need to post up pictures when done.

FLRunner

With the way  a 4runner seat mounts   I would think a Jeep rear seat would be much easier to use .   The 4 runner has 7 mounts to deal with .

i did this to an 86 xtra cab, and got a camper shell with a seal.

when i cut the cab i left about 2 inches extra and folded it over the bed wall and welded that together, so it was sealed at the bottom, the camper sealed the top.

make sure that you run some bracing between the cab and bed underneath so that they cannot flex independently of eachother, or tears in your welds or sheetmetel will apper, i used 2x1 1/8th wall rectangle box tube.

oh ya, we put 2 celica supra buckets in the back :D

I assume you were asking me. It is a new PRP seat I bought on craigslist from a guy who could not use it on his sandrail. From Poly they are $450.00. I picked it up for $250.00

maybe a samurai rear bench seat would work good.

Rocksurfer

Are those seat covers an option or did they come with the seat?  :gap:

If I were to do this I'd make sure I have a rollbar, cutting out the back really weakens the roof. If you've ever seen a roll on a non rollbar rig the only thing that stops the cab from crushing flat is the rear of the cab.

i have an interior cage right now.  i would definitley modify it to go further back and over the rear seat when its done.  i could imagine though what a roll over would like without it.

WHITE_TRASH

I've cut out the back of my last 3 bodies.  First gens are the easiest, follow the seam on the back of the cab and under the drip rail above the back window.  3rd gens aren't bad, same type of deal.  Never done a second gen but I don't imagine they're too tough either.

did you weld anything into the back of the cab to get some strength back into the it after you cut the back out?  got any pics?

I bolted the bed to the cab with pieces of 3/4" square tubing between them so everything was lined up and half way sealed.  There are lots of pics in my $300 thread.  If you need anything specific I can snap some later.

I finally cut out my cab! I'll post picks up soon. It sits higher than I would like in the rear. Fine for kids but get a full grown person and it's super tight and head room is limited. I'm thinking of cutting the floor of the bed out to lower it. Not sure yet considering the only person as of right now that will be back there is my daughter in her car seat.
