66 was the best year for chevelle/elc's period.  late 60's to 72 weren't bad and contrary to opinion they can be made to handle damned well with a bit of suspension work.  No they will never be able to keep up with a wrx but it can handle it's own on a road course.  If you wan pure fugliness check out 73-77 chevelles they are fawking hideous. :ack:

I'll have to agree with jimbo (although it pains me to do so :P ) The shop teacher loves his car so of course he thinks it's the best...  I don't know very many people that spend lots of time and money on a car they detest.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

I cant believe this is up for debate... I am a Ford guy and i love all the pre '72 chevelles... My buddy has a 64, his brother has a 71, and my cousin had a 67 (66-67 are my favorites).  And who would PREFER a nova??!!   I dont know, I love roundbody falcons (have a '63 convertible) and rancheros so maybe my sense of style is "off" to most standards.  Personally I stray away from the rediculously popular cars (camaros, mustangs, etc) simply because i like to be unique...

I can agree with most of that although I do like nova and camaro's dearly.

The early falcon's are sweet cars, I REALLY like the styling of them.. The next incarnation of the ranchero was heinous IMO but they got it right early on.

If you want to see something truly disgusting check out a canadian pontiac beaumont....  It is the epitomy of fugly to the chevelle lover..  :ack:

Hammerhead

Some of my buddies had Chevelles in high school and none of them could keep up with our old Ford Falcon.  It was ugly too but at least it wasn't a big ol' boat.  That being said, I don't think there were very many good lookin' cars in the '70s or the '80s.

Opinions are like assholes though, everyone has one. I don't know why the hell you think they are ugly but whatever, thats your opinion...

 Whole point of the thread was to get others opinions and that is what is happening so I think it is a success. I just personally would not choose to restore one if I had other more attractive (to my eye) options

Agreed. I've owned a '65 Malibu SS and a '66 Malibu. Loved them both but I still liked the late 60s early 70s A-bodies. '73 they all went down hill and looked like poo. The Chevy IIs from '62-67 (really like '67s) are beautiful cars, after that they got boxy and look like grandma cars.

Like others have said, he loves it because it's HIS car. No it probably doesn't handle like a rally car but it was built 40 yrs. ago. Technology has changed a bit. There are a bunch of parts out there to update the handling but lots of people like to spend their change under the hood. It's all in preference.

Funny that this topic came up this week and somewhat related I took a 57 Chevy truck to a car show this weekend and won Best All Original Vehicle. My brother took a 39 Chrysler coupe and won Best Street Rod. :gap:

Familiarity breeds contempt. There are sooooo many of the Chevelles, Camaros, etc out there that even the killer examples don't catch my eye.

To my eye...the 67 Tempest/GTO and the 68 Mustang are just great examples of the coach builder's craft.

Um, the 67 Tempest/GTO are on the Chevelle platform. :gap:

I see a beautiful example everyday, there is a gold 67 GTO fully restored sitting outside a shop I go by on the way to work.

Body style Braaaaaaaaaaah! I don't care it the 67 body is mounted on a F450 frame...it's a sharp car!
