first truck build
« on: Jan 25, 2009, 08:27:24 AM »
This is my first toyota truck build.I got it to go hunting in ,and now its taking on a  new form . It was a 86 stock ifs suspension,it was ok but head gasket blowing ,and frame rusted bad, changed my mine to build it as strong as i can. So I'm going to do a sas swap, dual transfercase, gears ,lockers, axles, rear disc brake, driveline e brake, motor mods, and exco roll cage.   Heres what ive got done so far(im on a budget so do a little at a time)  engine is done ported polished head,lc engineering street cam kit with retainers, bored 30 over with 9.7 keith black pistons, all new bearings and engine parts, weber 32/36 carb ,and header.Next is to put msd ,and eletric fan in it.  Got another frame cut all ifs stuff out. Got my rear end done last week 529 gears with aussie lockers front and rear,And my disc brake conversion also finished. Got to start on front end now it came out of a 81 toyota ,saving up for longfied axles and berfields.Heres some pic of what ive done so far. Ihope im on the right track ,any help would be great, because im learning as i go . thanks

heres a side view of the brackets, i used 1/4 steel to make my brackets you might have to use a washer to shim them to get the correct spacing.if you build them use 2 hacksaw blades to get correct spacing from rotor to caliper. the blades well fit right on top of the rotor so you can slid caliper right on top of the rotor and get real close with out rubing . the blads flex perfect . i hope this helps

Why the center link on the rear end? You have leafs on the back.
DD, 22R, L52HD, 35"s, All pro/Marlin Hysteer, 529's, Aussie Locker in rear only. 5" All Pro springs and 5" shackles. Just purpose built and dependable. A/C blows like ice too... www.4x4HIM.org

Please dont take this question in the wrong way. I just figured you'd have a good answer thats all. Why did you go with that rough country leaf and block set up instead of a set of 5" or "6 Marlin leafs.

Why didn't you just link it?  Since you're going from frame up and all...

ok guys here my question  im ready for a dual transfercase  should i get a 228.1 and a 470.1 ultimate crawler or should i go with 228.1 dual and leave the 470.1 out of the transfercase. the reason i ask is that is a hunting truck and im not a hard core wheeler.  but i think ive went overkill already. and i want to drive on the road. what do you guys think

If your not into really hardcore wheeling then i would say dual cases are probably more then you need, the lowrange in your stock t-case should be plenty for a hunting truck. I say this because I run some pretty wild stuff sometimes and I dont have duals, the 5.29's get me low enough for now (for me anyways). I have also noticed there there are some design flaws regarding the inputshaft on the crawl boxes that seems to make them more or less unsuitable for long term DD use.

Also:
'99 SR5/TRD Tacoma w/5vzfe. SAS'd with 64" diamond axle (w/ long superset & ARB). about 5" of lift, 305/75 x16 BFG KM1's. Soon to come: 1.5" more lift (6.5"), 35 to 37" tire, undecided at this point., 63" F/F diamond rear, Marlin 4.7 tacobox.
