Backspacing
« on: Sep 10, 2004, 12:30:22 AM »
I just recieved a set of steel rims for my truck. 15 / 8 inch  with 3.75 backspacing. Will this be enough backspacing to push the 33" 12.50 mtr's away from the frame?

Thanks

Tires won't hit the frame in front.  Is must be in the back he is talkign about.

I meant the frame in the back. The new rims are 3.75 backspacing, the truck is an 81 which im told has the largest fender openings, but I noticed with my stock rims the tires are pretty close to the rear leaf springs. Im sure the 3.75 is adequate just wondering what most guys run out there.

wait, does a smaller number when it comes to backspacing mean the rim is farther out from the Brakes?

how do you measure backspacing? i also bought some steel 15x8's and i dont know what the back spacing is and im concerned about the same thing happening with a 12.50 width tire.

Measure from the inside of the wheel mountring surface to the inside part of the bead.  You have to eyeball it or use a straight edge across the rim.

yep, i usually go from the inside for measurement and use a strait ruler or something for a mark on the outer edge.

those look like 15x8's

If you're talking about a 1st gen toy pickup, driving down the freeway, no you will not rub the frame with a 12.5 tire w/ a 3.75 bs wheel.  Now out wheeling is another story.   :gap:

yea you'll have rubage, kinda depends on the size tire and lift though not just the width.

I HAD 37x12.50's on an 82' with 8" lift and it rubbed the outer frame rails in the back (lightly) and the front rubbed the inner kick panels on the cab pretty bad.

I've since got 2" spacers f/r and cut back the front a little and its not so bad.

Depends on how big the tires are.

ive narrowed down my choices to these tires:35" bfgs or MT/R's, 34x10.50 LTbs or a 33x13.50 but idk. im going to put 54" chevies in back and rears in front for a lift. do you think i would be ok with 35s?

Yes.  If you chose a smaller tire you will later wish you had gone with the bigger tire in the first place.

dig it all depends on what your plans are for this truck. Personally speaking I like my 37's.. not to big yet not to small but my rig mainly see's the trails and not much pavement these days.

If I was gonna have a DD/weekend wheeler i'd probably go 35's unless I did an engine swap for more HP because my trucks dog @$$ slow pushing 37's with a 22r and 5.29's

Your standard rear wheel drive wheel will have a 3.75" backspacing, no matter the width, 15x6 on up.  Unless you specifically order one with less backspacing!  You measure from the backside, with a straight edge resting in the lip where the lead weights would rest, and measure down to the lugnut holes!

Also, you need to remember that if you put a wide tire on a narrower wheel than recommended it will flare out from the lip of the wheel evenly from both sides.  The tire will be closer to the frame than you like!  So the wider the wheel the less chance of the tire rubbing the frame!  (i.e. a 12.50" tire can fit on a 8" wheel but will fit better and won't flare out if on a 10" wheel)  You want the sidewall of the tire to be straight up from the lip of the wheel!  If you want to run a narrower wheel with a wide tire you'd be better off with a wheel with less than 3.75" backspace.  Or, use spacers!  Go to your local tire store and have them mount up a tire on two different widths of wheels and have them put them on your rig and this will help you decide on which wheel width you really need to go with, and it will give ya a idea of what its gonna look like!

Rule of thumb is the narrower the wheel the more it will pull the tire inside the wheelwell!
