Yota-Freak

well thanks for everything guys, ur all still the best. alright alright...ill use the damn search thing from now on. lol

NorCalToy

4.83 would return you to exactly as stock with 28" tires from the factory. (without factoring in weight, wind resistance, etc. )

using the "Find new Gear Ratio with new tire size"

.05 wouldnt be noticeable and youd have to anyways since they dont make a 4,83 gear set...

its just a basic guideline as to what youd need to return to sotck, so you go to the closest gear set,

4.10
4.56
4.88
5.29
5.71

It does not give misleading info, it uses math to calculate what an exact match would be to stock. Its up to you to figure the closest ratio. I could write up a formula really fast if you want me to to show you how to figure it yourself. Its really REALLY simple algebra.

I would go 4.88 if you never plan to go bigger, or if planning to go bigger spring for the 5.29s so regearing wont be necessary when you move up. :twocents:

Yota-Freak

yeah ill roll with the 5.29's lol..as for the math...screw that....infact...thanks...i totally forgot to do my math hw..lmao..do it in the am.

lol, we tend to do that...

Anyway, so gears
4.88; 33-35s
5.29; 35-38ish
5.71; 38-42ish

take your pick,
More like:
4.10; 27-37's
4.88; no point
5.29; 38-44
5.71; 46-53

as long as you drive around town in 2wd low like I do.

Yota-Freak

well is ur truck a DD? mine is and its a half hour drive out to my school...with my chevy..its like 50 with my yota..lol

Rocksurfer

Well this thread was more entertaining than the title.

Anywho I run 33's on 4.10's and except in a strong head wind or uphill I can run in 5th no problem I would think that if you can't do no better than 50mph in any condition you have more than a gearing issue.

If and when I re-gear it will be 4.88's or 5.29's, now if you plan on going even bigger with tire size then I would absolutely go with 5.29's.

I find doing the imaginary "paddling in a canoe upstream" helps me go faster in my truck.  Get weird looks sometimes, but helps pass the time while going so slow!

ok let me simplify.....my truck goes slower than crap...and im only running 33's. 22r. what do i need to do

My 85 Extended Cab had a 22R, 4.10 gears and 32 inch tires when I purchased it.  In that configuration it would easily cruise 80+ mph (obviously not uphills or into head winds) and I was passed once by it while riding in a Ford Focus that was going about 90 mph.

When I put 33 inch tires on it, I quickly felt the need to regear for in town driving.  I wasn't satisfied with the amount of clutch slipping that was required to get things rolling.

I had 4.88 gears installed and was extremely happy.  I was again able to cruise around 80 mph.

Currently, I am driving a heavier 89 4Runner that has the same front axle and rear differential with 4.88 gears and am running 35 inch tires.  I am able to cruise at 65 to 70 mph on the highway in reasonable conditions.  If I had money to thow at it I would love to have 5.29s, but the 4.88s are more than adequate.

If your truck won't pull more than 50 mph with 33s and 4.10 gears something else is wrong with your truck.  You should be able easily cruise 65 mph on the highway unless you live at high altitude, like Colorado.  Vail Pass would pull my 85 down into 2nd gear on the steep grades while similar hills in Washington State I could still run 65 mph with larger tires.

yeah i live in idaho...the town is a few hundred feet shy of a mile. that might be it. well thanks for the help man. everyone else gave me a hard time. lol

REG535

Well I still think its not a gearing problem with you, even with 4.10s it shouldn't be that bad, something is not right.
My friend on 35s, 4.10s, 5 speed with 86 x-cab, 22re, he drove fast no matter if it was a hill, a mountain or whatever, he never had an issue going fast enough to past most people. He even swayed through traffic like it was mini cooper with 35s and 7'' lift!

Being a mile above sea level will loose a fair amount of power.

Yota-Freak

i can never know when ur serious or not Rocksurfer...lmao

Rocksurfer

I would be serious about that one, you will loose hp that high. Air is a lot thinner.

Yota-Freak

that much hp? enough to slow me down that much...lame!

Rocksurfer

I feel a power difference from being at sea level compared to 8,000 to 10,000 and it is a significant lose. The percentage of lose would be the same for a 4 cyl. as a V8 so the 4 cyl. will feel a bigger lose faster.

Yota-Freak

well how will i get more nutz outta of it for cheap

Rocksurfer

Headers will give you some, are you injected or carbed. If you are carbed a Weber carb will help since it can be re-jetted.
The Ghost-Rider/Ghost Runner

No matter how far you fall, the ground will always catch you

Yota-Freak

its carbed...and it has headers...but i need a new exhaust to make them useful...its crazy they guy that owned it b4 me...has the headers....then it goes into one tube...then back into two...then back into one again..lmao...BACKYARD MECHANIC! lol. maybe that will give me more power if i get a new 40 series flowmaster with....headers into one pipe only...lol

Rocksurfer

Well if any of that causes a restriction of exhaust flow it will also rob you of hp.
