In drag racing "street" cars run about a second slower in Denver that they do at sea level.  I believe the horsepower loss is about 20% if memory servers me correctly.

I'd still say there is more to your problem than simply altitude, but it is certainly a factor.

well when i bought the damn thing...it was only runnin on two cylinders...well one didnt have compression or spark...missing a spark plug

Rocksurfer

But if you think about it 20% of a 4 cyl. will be a lot. I know that an auto sucks about 15% and my 4 cyl. auto was a slug out of the hole until the turbo kicked in at 2500 rpm. Sure he's got a lot of miles on it too and that probably is not helping either.

well solar86 has 4.56 (we think)...runnin 32's...and ud think he was running 235's lmao! hes soooo fast

82 HiLux

i run 5.29s with 33s, its not too low at all, i think its perfect. it makes up for the heavy tires and your truck will haul ass. i dont think 4.88s and 5.29s cost any different. if you get 5.29s you can easily run 35s or bigger later on. i have gone 95 with 5.29s and 33s on the freeway, but thats pretty intense :yikes:.

thats what i wanted to hear! this barily goin 50 crap is killing me..lmao

82 HiLux

yeah but like everyone said, thats something with your engine. there could be a number of things worn out in your engine that would make you have a lot less horsepower. im just repeating whats been said already though. do a tune up on your 22r before you drop all the money for gears. when i had 33s and 4.10s, i was able to go like 75 in 4th gear on the freeway because i had my engine running correctly.

did that get completly resolved? issues like this will GREATLY reduce your freeway speeds!! :hammerhead:

well yeah it needs a rebuild...275k on it...no rebuilds its entire life..lol

Snowtoy

What are the comp numbers now?  Have you adjusted the valves lately?

As to 50mph, is that what the speedo reads, or is that w/the 18% compensation for the 33's, i.e. 50 on speedo is actually 59mph.

4.88's work alright for the 33's(much better when running a 3.0), but you should opt for the 5.29's, so that you have a little extra gearing for the 22r.

Don't open up the exhaust too much, you need the right amount of back pressure for low end torque.  The current exhaust may also be causing some of your power loss issues.  What size exhaust tube did the PO use?

yeah its reading about 45 on the speedo....i do live in a valley so it is windy alot...but i can get er to climb to 55 on the speedo with wind pushing me down hill. also yeah i know the exhaust is draining my power...did u read about it up top? the guy the owned it way back when put some headers on it (which are just fine) then dueled the exhaust, then brought it back to one pipe, then split it again then brought it back to one pipe! its horrible..lmao. and i want a new muffler.

Snowtoy

I think that split would reduce your back pressure quite a bit.  If it is after the cat, cut it out and put in some straight tube and new muffler.  If you use a cheap raptor turbo muffler(about $24), it should cost you less than 50 to put the exhaust back to a single set-up, maybe less if you can grab an oem set-up from a junk yard.

my buddy paid 70 for his set up...how much u think it would be with a flowmaster?

If that was at a shop, it was likely a stock type replacement, a flowmaster would likely be more.  You also wouldn't necessarily have to pay a shop, you could use muffler clamps and a sleeve.  A pic would be helpful to see how FUBAR'd the exhaust system is.

yeah lets see a picture of that exhaust. if you get a muffler from www.summitracing.com you can get a dynomax or summit brand muffler for like 20-25 dollars.

I'm running a header, flowmaster 40, highflow cat and full 2.25'' exhaust, works great but it's loud as hell.

At what speed?  A tire diameter difference results in a percentage difference.  A 10% difference means you would be going 68 mph if the speedo reads 60 mph, but only 33 mph when the speedo shows 30 mph.

A quick calculation shows that the difference between a 28 inch diameter and a 33 inch diameter is about 18% so your 8 mph difference should be at about 45 mph on the speedo.  When the speedo reads 60 mph your doing about 71 mph and when the speedo reads 30 mph you're doing about 36 mph.

I run 33's with 4.88 gears and I can do 70-75 on flat ground at half throttle. Thats with a stock 20r and a weber. 85mph if I floor it.  When I had stock gears I couldnt keep up with traffic on the freeway at all.
