3.4runner FAILED!!!
« on: Jan 01, 2009, 10:07:02 PM »
I finally got fed  up with the 22re so I decided to do an engeine swap.

I picked up an 03 3.4l from TSLBOGGER.  The engine is from a Tacoma 4x4 extra cab.  It supposedly has around 65k and was in a rollover.

The recipient is my 86 4runner with an 84 frame.  So far I have removed the old engine trans combo.  Rebuilt an R150, cut and modified my engine mounts, and started on the fuel/vapor lines.

I intend to keep the vapor canister under the truck, and modify the stock tank to accept the sending unit and rollover valves from the taco tank.

I am going to use an ORS crossover which I should see tuesday, and I will be doing the wiring myself .

This is the engine in place.

Fuel lines.
Today I got the fuel lines mostly installed.  I am just short a few insulated clamps.  Keep in mind I will be covering this with insulated mat to keep the heat out of the fuel.  It is a bit tight on the driver side fender, but once everything is clamped down It should work out nicely.

So now I have to figure out where to mount the huge PCM.  Any Ideas of where others have done this would be helpfull.  Thanks.

Well I have finished quite a bit of the swap and took it for a drive yesterday.  The power is awesome, and it puts the 22r to shame.
All I have left at this point is the hood, the muffler, AC, and the ECM mount.

Well, i got it done, didnt take many more pics though.  Put about 3000 miles on it.  Got the cruise working.  Electronic throttle control is awesome. :)  My Ref Apt is on thursday in Fresno, so wish me luck.  Hopefully he is kind to me about my fuel tank mod like he has been to Mike.  I will let you know how it turns out.

If anyone has questions about the swap, or needs pics let me know, that way we can save server space.

Oh yeah, best part is going up Tehachapi grade on 35's, towing my 2500# tent trailer, My brother couldn't keep up in his 3.0l runner on 32's with no trailer.

I moved my engine and trans about 4 inches forward, so no firewall issues.  The drag link just barely touches the pan on full compression so no issues there.  I did have to cut a hole in the hood, because I did not wish to run a body lift.  I would not go quite so far forward if I was going to do it again.

if it was back a little bit would you have run into the hood issue?

Yes, there is just not enough room under the hood, You either need a body lift or cut a hole in the hood.  Unless you have a ton of suspension lift, then maybe you could set the engine really low.

Well the ref failed me, but I still got a sticker.  i was pissed.  He failed me for the exhaust being on the wrong side.  I guess this is all up to the ref, cause my buddies truck passed witht the same configuration.  In fact, the ref he went to actually commented on how much he liked the crossover from ORS.  I dont think it is a big deal, because like I said, I got the sticker so now all I have to do is go to the regular smog shop.  I dont think the guys at the rocket smog will care.

Ran into another problem though.  Apparently the stock 3.0l radiator is not sufficient.  Towing my trailer (2500#) up to Oakhurst in 105 deg temp, the collent temp started to climb.  It never made the red on the gauge, but I stopped at one of the water stations and shot it with my infared and got readings as high as 240.  So it looks like I will be stopping by Advanced Adapters, they have a 4 core made for the chevy v6-v8 that should be sufficient.  $425 sucks though.

None of those places list a radiator upgrade for the 3.0l.  Northwest has a 3 core with "desert coolong", for $427 but they dont have it in stock.  Seems a bit much considering it is the same core count as the stocker.  Thy claim that the 3.0l radiators are junk, but there arent many upgrades available.

Yeah, i guess they just give you a stickr nowdays, and leave it up to the smog shop to make sure that everything is ok.  Did you use a crossover pipe?

Just an idea... I had AAA radiators in fresno re-core my 22r radiator to 3 row...around $120 IIRC... it consistently runs about an 1/8 of a guage sweep cooler than before now.  Might do the trick for you at a little less cost.  :dunno:

i made my own crossover by cutting up/rewelding the factory one...

I still need to get my obd2 port, and stock air box, evap box.

did you have to get a obd2 cat?  or what?  idk what to do about that.

I got th cats with the tacoma, so I ran thm  you will probably need to get a CA compliant cat to maek them happy.  But I dont know about your crossover, i hope you have better luck.

well shoot...

ive heard other people not having problems, so im going to keep my fingers crossed.
The donor tacoma only had 1 cat on it, and i didn't get it  (someone bought it), but i could probably bolt the cat off our 99 4runner onto my exhaust for the test.. idk if that will work or not.

Yeah, I think that would work just fine.  However, your engine will not run right without a cat unless you make a simulator for the rear 02 sensor.

Yeah, as long as you have a cat the 02 should be happy.  Just slap the one from your runner in when you go in.  Have you towed anything with your truck?

nope, haven't towed anything.. i doubt i ever will.

I/and so were the people who drove it, where impressed how well it pulled the 40" tires i had on yesterday.  That will be the biggest comparison to pulling/caring/moving more weight than normal.

are you happy with your swap?  Ive been getting between 17-20 mpg driving it on 35's and 5.29's  in the mountains where i live.   its got great power, runs awesome, and is much easier to access things in the engine bay.  VERY happy with the swap, only downside is going to be seeing the ref.

I've got no complaints about the power.  I get about 17 max on 35's with 4:88.  I love the swap right now, only complaint is this heat issue.  Hopefully I can get that taken care of.  Gonna stop by AA after work.

Did you put a new thermostat in yours?

My 3.0l radiator is cooling it fine, its not the stock one though, its a 3 core aftermarket radiator..

is yours the stock one?

Yeah, Its got a new t-stat, waterpump, and 3 core rad, I just had it rodded and cleaned.  Heat issue is only when I am towing and it is hot out.  Needle never moves when I am not towing.

Since there isn't a cooling issue when driving w/o the trailer, you might consider running a small pusher fan in front of the radiator, and wired it to either a switch or wire it to come on at a certain temp.
