Water pump replacement
« on: Oct 18, 2008, 06:09:17 PM »
I blew a water pump bearing. I picked up a new pump and RTV, the pump came with a gasket...

So any info from people who have done this before? RTV or the gasket, RTV and the gasket? I have the FSM but haven't looked at the water pump section yet, is there anything missing from the FSM I should know?

Thanks ahead of time,
J

I would use just the gasket rather than the RVT. If you use too much RVT, it can squeeze out into the coolant passage. If the RVT breaks free it will flow through the cooling system & could get caught in the t-stat or plug a coolant passage. If you must use the RVT, just use a thin coat on the water pump side of the gasket, not the timing cover side.  :twocents:

Also there are 2 water pump styles.

Just enough RTV to make it stick, I agree with not using so much that it may get into the passages.

Okay, so I'm getting started on this... the directions with the pump say to use both gasket and sealent... so, "enouph to make it stick"... gottcha.

No, RTV on any of the bolts?

Okay, finished. Only problem is I over torqued a bolt and it sheered in the block.  :censored: So now I have to fix that.

Thanks for the help... I'll post pictures later.
