22re: odd problem, down right weird cause.
« on: Oct 11, 2008, 03:04:30 PM »
Ok i have a 1987 4runner sr5, completly stock with the 22re and for the last couple months have had idle issues, its been acting like a tps sensor because the idle hunts when you hit the gas, but only when the truck is not moving ??? so after checking every sensor and component that usually causes this issue and adjusting the tps multiple times I pretty much gave up on this 4runner ever running right again and planned to just live with it until i can swap a 3.4 in and have limited driving my 4runner to around town duty only. this morning driving around town I realized that my issue only happens when the vehicle is stopping or at a stop. the only 2 inputs into the ecu that would be used during this condition are the stop light switch and the speed sensor siginal from the gauge cluster. I unplugged the stop light switch and the problem was still there, so i cut the wire going into the ecu for the speed sensor and my issues are gone  :woohoo: now the big question is do i diagnose any further and either repair wiring, replace the gauge cluster or ecu or do i just stop at this point and enjoy my truck until the 3.4 swap.

no the speedo is still cable driven, but the speed sensor sends signal to the ecu for ...I forget.
I remember BigMike saying the 3RZ didn't put forth all its' power unless the spd was hooked up...

Don't suppose you tried another ECU?

no i still have the speedo because the ecu reads off the speedometer which is cable driven, havent had access to another ecu to try out so I'm not completly sure weather it the speed sensor or the ecu yet. the first thing i did when this started was cleaned the throttle body, adjusted the tps, checked the o2 sensor, maf sensor, iac and finely swapped out the throttle body for a known good unit on the advice of a toyota master tech at work because he said there is a little wax pellet in the throttle body that controls coolant flow, after nothing worked and the problem just got worse is when i pretty much gave up. i have done my best to keep the 22re running as cheap as possible because i do plan on a 5vz swap this spring, thankfully finding the malfunction on spd will let me drive it until spring.

Sure you don't have a leaking brake booster?
Is it an automatic? Most of the sensor for speed are for shifting purpose. EGR openin early?

My truck is a 5speed, egr is opperating normally and I scoped the 02 sensor and everything is working :boobs: I guess i didnt fully explain my issue, the truck when sitting still would idle fine, when you would press the gas the rpms would max out at about 1500 rpm and alternate between 1500 and 900 at about 1 second intervals a little faster when you floor it, once you got the truck to move the engine would act fine until you came to a stop and it would start hunting again when you pressed the gas.

There is a little flap door on the air box remove the airbox and look inside of it....spray some carb clean or something in it to make sure that flap is moving freely....i had a similar idle issue, and that took care of it. :crossed:
