SAS swap or body swap
« on: Sep 22, 2008, 12:03:30 PM »
I've got an 89 4 runner with IFS and can get my hands on an 85 solid axle. I'm suprised the IFS swap kit and the full suspension lift kit are so similar in price, so I'm debating, which is the easier route to go? cut off the IFS and SAS or swap bodies and do the full lift kit on the 85?

SAS swaps really are not that hard at all, i would rather do a SAS then swap a body, thats not fun at all and ifs trucks alreddy have the good steering boxes and wider rear axle.

If you have a donor, a stock height SAS swap is really a matter of time and some welding.  Virtually no cost involved.   I know it's not fashionable here to ride stock height, but even a stock SAS setup will eat a stock IFS setup for lunch off-road.

dont do the body swap! trust me its more work than you want to put in to that thing. i have done both and i would take a dozen sas projects over on body swap. plus you have to re-vin the the whole thing if you want it to be street legal (cops get a little pissy when your plates dont match the vin #'s). spend the xtra $400 or 500 to do the sas and lift the rear.

i would just SAS the IFS truck

hell, if you are going to do a lift such as Marlin's or All-Pro, you basically need to SAS the solid axle anyways, in terms of installing a hanger, installing the rear spring hanger, and shackle mounts, etc
