PROJECT WHISKEY TANGO (update half doors)
« on: Jun 06, 2009, 06:02:12 PM »
about 2 years ago i bought a bone stock 86 yota long bed from a hippie in portland for $800, he was asking $1200 but i told him it needed a lot of work, he believed me. it had little rust on the bed and no dents, the inside was near perfect. a month later i got a dui and lost my license so i thought it was a perfect time to start a project.

the first thing i did was bought 100 feet of 1 1/2x1 1/2 square tubing to build a flatbed. with the help of my girlfriend we completed the bed in about 2 weekends, she helped a lot with the design. after that i decided to get the SAS kit from sky manufacturing in eugene since they are a fairly local shop. every week after that i would add more and more on to the order. within 2 months i ended up with the SAS kit, 85 axle, 30 spline bobby longs, 5:29 front and rear, spooled rear with 63's, lockrite upfront and 33'' bfg's. Those tires were way too small but i picked them up almost new for a good price. i recently just got 37"" Irok bias plys which are the best tire i have ran.

every weekend me and my girlfriend and buddies would work on the truck and every weekend it looked more and more like a wheeler. thanks to abe, chad, anthony, and squeak we got the truck done in about 3 months. My girlfriend played a big roll too, she helped hold things and do a little welding here and there, she also ran to the store every morning to get me a new can of chew, thanks mandi!

I did the whole build up in my dads 36x48 foot shop. recently we bought a 2 post lift, it was about a year late but now i have it for the next build.

I will post some pics once i have enough posts to put pics on.

yeah its different, i have to cut some of the expanded metal out there the rear tires flex, they rub on it, or i can also get off set wheels. right now i have 2 pieces of rubber protecting the tires from rubbing on the metal.

Front shackles are backwards? And I would go cases. Toyotas don't need winches...

yeah i know i was going to flip them around sometime this week. I have not been real motivated though because it has plenty of flex how it sits. but it needs to be done at some point. thanks for the heads up though.

Cool truck.

I vote dual cases. that way you use the winch less. and you'll have enough control with the cases that maybe you'll get your self out of a jame and wont need the cage.

I vote either dual cases or the winch. Though i say winch for the most part. mine practically payed for itself first run out with it  "heh heh hehhhh that doesnt look that deep i think ill just drive throuh.. bruuuhhhbbbbuubububu", next thign i know im buried up to me doors in mud and water. holy crap i think about it now, its a damn good thing i had a winch.

i dont know a thing about cases, what to buy, what gear ratio, price...the list goes on. T-case has got to be the thing i know least about.

my buddie sold me these doors for cheap so i decided to give it a shot at making half doors, this is my first time building these, we'll see how they turn out. i was almost done with the first door and my grinder took a dump on me and started smoking. looks like its home depot in the morning.

her is the pics:

i vote some duals, but just 2 stock cases, that should be enough. then later if you decide to get a 4.7 gear or something (3rd case maybe ??? )
