bob it.  I ran mine as a longbed for over 3 years and finally decided that it just wasn't cutting it.  I would drag ass on just about everything.  I finished the bob on my 84 last weekend.  took out 12 inches out of the bed and 5 off the frame.  I'll post some pictures this weekend.

maybe turn this into a bobbed longbed thread.  maybe others will post some pics.

Ill play devils advocate here...I was going to bob my longbed but decided against it.  I built a 1/4'' rear bumper that acts as a slider.
Wheeling with this setup does not affect me AND the best part is I can always bring tons of gear/firewood!

Marlin's truck used to be this way and I thought he said bobbing the truck was the best mod ever and didn't know why he had waited so long.

I never understood it fully, when you cut the bed, what do you do for the frame? You let stick out or what? If you cut it how on earth do you put longer springs on when you have move the shackle back farther?, I've always been confused about this modification.

there is room on the frame to cut off 5" or so and still have 2" behind the stock mount. It all depends on how much you want to take out.

twistedtoy92

and you can always mount your shackles on the back of the bumper when you box the rear of the frame!

On my 85 extended cab I cut 13 inches out of the bed and I believe it should be similar from the frame back to a long bed (?) if the main difference is in the cab/front of the bed.  If I were to do it again, I would have made the cut a few inches less for additional room and I doubt it would have made much difference off road.

from my earlier post, here are some pics, before and during.  I too thought that keeping the longbed for storage was a good idea until I brought stuff I didn't really need and carried way too much weight.  I also had the bumper that I let drag, that ended up just causing issues.  so I cut it all off.

Ttruck

here are 2 pics of it done.....

jimbo74

looks good, you only need a 6 ft bed anyways ;)

yep, exactly.  I'm pulling the truck box and getting a different tote to use the space differently......looking to pack more efficiently and packing less.

Stupid NOOB question. What is the best tool for cutting the bed? I think a jig-saw will make the straighest cuts. What did yall use? Sawsall? Cutoff Wheel?

Thanks,

Alex
