3RD member Questions
« on: Sep 07, 2008, 06:36:20 PM »
I Have an 86 4Runner, it has a solid axle up front and has been converted to a 5 speed and has 4.30 gears. the pinion bearing and seal in the front axle is bad so i was wondering if its possible to swap 3rd members from a 90-94 4Runner with a 3.slow into my truck ?, and can you run a 3rd member that was originaly in the rear in the front axle ?, and how can i tell what the gear ratio is on the V6 third members ?.

Any help is appreciated.

you can run that third in the front no problem, as long as the gears match.  Look at the axle code on the VIN tag. it should say something like R150F/G102.  the second set of letters/numbers is the gear ratio.

or is the new third out and on the ground?

My truck was an automatic so it has 4.30 gears, so if i swapped 3rd members i would do both because im sure the V6 would have better gears than 4.30`s. if i was to read the axle/vin tag how do i read it ?, what gear ratio would G102 be ?,and are there other gear ratios ?. the 3rd members would be comming out 90-94 V6 4Runners with an automatic.

Only the rear third out of an IFS rig will be usable.

Thanks for all the help guys, were can i go to find out what the axle codes translate into, like G102 = ? and G292 = ?, so i know what im getting.

Does it matter if the 3rd members come from a 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive V6 4Runner ?.

With the information that Diffil sent me im starting to understand this, so with that said and to be clear on everything, the V6 3rd member and my stock axle shafts front and rear will all bolt up together (A direct swap) with no problems or any other needed parts, right ?.

As long as you realize you can't use the front (IFS) third in your solid axle.  Only the rear.

no, the front IFS axle is completely different and can't use a 8" diff

This i understand, i will be using two 3rd members from the rear of a V6 4Runner, so they should be direct replacements for the front and rear of my 86 4Runner. my 4Runner has a solid axle swapped in place of the ifs.

You will almost definitely have to redrill the bolt hole patterns at the pinion flanges. Not a major issue, just something to be aware of. I ran into this swapping a 4cyl 3rd into my V6 runner temporarily to regear the V6 one expecting to swap it in and drive away.
