#rd member questions
« on: Feb 19, 2006, 08:13:34 PM »
ok if i have a 5.29 geared, 4cyl, 3rd member is the stock carrier still used or does it have to be changed out?? if that is so they can be changed out with out any misalignment with the ring and pinion???? and if possible does anybody have any nice info on this sort of stuff? so i can be a lil more educated with my project.

thanks much

Not exactly sure what you are asking. Correct me if i'm wrong, but I think you're asking, if you have a stock 3rd member with stock gears, what's it take to put in 5.29's.
If that's the question, then yes 5.29's can be put in a stock carrier, but it's not something a novice mechanic can do and it takes some specialized tools to do it right and if it's not done right, you'll be buying another set of new gears and starting over.
If you find a 3rd member that is already setup with 5.29's then it is a pretty easy swap to pull your stock one out and replace it with the built one.

Hope this answered your question, if not, reword it and i'll try again.

I think only Dana carriers have to be switched out to accomidate a lower ratio.
There are not to many special tools that you need to install the gears... but it is VERY time consuming.
http://www.gearinstalls.com/ This is the best site I have found on Toyota gear intalls, I think ZUK is on the board sometimes too.

Werd, swap away.  There is only one ratio that can require a ring shim, or some kinda adjustment and 5.29 aint it.
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

is there a good pinion shim size to start with i have hred to start at .102  :dunno: ?
is it ok to use a lot of little shims (would it be bad if i used like 10 real small or should i use one big one and a fwe small ones)?
