3 inch body lift..good or bad?
« on: Sep 01, 2008, 12:09:49 PM »
I'm pretty new to building up 4x4's. I bought a 79' with a 3 inch body lift. The truck handles like crap. It wonders all over the road. I was wondering if i should remove the body lift when i put my 3inch suspension lift on it? I checked all of the steering components and everything seems tight. I didn't know if the bodylift would cause it to wonder or not.

you dont need the bodylift... but a bodylift wont cause the vehicle to wander

No the body lift wont cause the wandering but 3in is a little tall for my taste. I have a 2in but it is on to clear the drivetrain.

I might take it off..This truck will be a d/d so i was going to put 33's on it. It would just make the truck taller than i need it. Idk, maybe I should just see how it is with the suspension lift. I do have a front diff that I've been building with new trunion bearings, 4.88's, locked and all that.

Worn out spring bushings will cause this too.   3" BL can cause problems with the 4wd shifter staying in 4wd if the floorboard isn't clearnanced for it.  I'd test it before a wheeling trip.

Where are you located krash?  Someone may have a set of used lift springs in your area for cheap.

A three inch body lift will cause everyone to think you're a poser...  Cut it in half.  I agree about replacing the trunion bearings though.

3" body lifts are fine, they look a little funny since you can see more frame, but the way i see it is that you are lifting less weight in the air with a body lift as opposed to a suspension lift, since the motor doesnt raise with a b lift you have a better center of gravity. Also the amount of room around your drivetrain is greatly increased making it easier to repair/replace parts.

I installed a 2" body lift on my 4Runner & wheeled it for 1 1/2 years & this is a dd. I took it off & wheeled it. It feels more stable when wheeling & on the road.

Read the warnings from a manufacture of body lifts. I know you have a 79 but the warnings are the same for all.

"This body lift kit should only be installed on vehicles that
are in good working condition. Before the installation
begins, the vehicle should be thoroughly inspected for
evidence of corrosion or deformation of the sheet metal
around the factory body mounts. This body lift kit should
not be installed on any vehicle that is suspected to have
been in a collision, or misused. Off road use of your
vehicle with this body lift installed may increase the stress
applied to the factory body mounts. It is not
recommended that any vehicle, with a body lift installed,
be involved in any extreme off road maneuvers.
Failure
to follow this warning may result in serious personal injury
and/or serious damage to your vehicle."

Hmmm... interesting. If/when I do a body lift it will be a 4crawler body lift using the ultimate blocks. Check it out sometime... it is probably the best body lift setup I have seen for toyotas: http://4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/BodyLiftKit.shtml

Yeah, I was thinking that the 3 inch was a bit much. It's something that the P/O did. But I bought the truck because the frame body (floorboards) are exceptionally rust free. It's just something that came with it. So then taking it off or going with like an 1 1/2 would be the better setup? I definitely want function over looks.

You've got to decide for yourself.  I've got a 3" body lift on my truck, and I don't have any problems with it 1985efitoyota makes a good point, and it is certainly valid.  I've wheeled hard, and it has never been an issue.

I had a 4 runner with a 2inch body lift and i noticed only one difference from it being at stock height and that was there seemed to be a little more body roll.  However you stated its on a p/u, and obviously a body lift on a p/u compared to a 4 runner is completely different when adding weight and everything combined.  I personnally don't think its a big deal but if I were you I would wheel it and drive it around and then decide if you want to change it.

I have a 3in BL with 33s on my 87 and it seems to handle just fine.
alot better then before when i have stock with 35s.

no matter if its a body lift or suspension lift... it only handles as bad as you make it.

I wouldn't go over a 2 inch body lift, there are a lot of issues that come up with a 3 inch. None of them will make your vehicle wander though. You will experience more body roll but that's about it. Before you remove the blocks make sure that things have not been altered that will affect dropping it. There may be a lot of extensions added like brake lines, shifters, etc., etc.

You just want to be careful coming to conclusions about different mods based on input from just a few people.  Certainly take their opinions, but you've got to decide for yourself, and base your knowledge on research.  :gap:
