Please Please Please look for mortorcycles while driving
« on: Aug 26, 2008, 07:35:15 PM »
Well...I'm not hurt too bad. Here is what happened:

I was on my way back to work from lunch.  This is a 4lane road, 30MPH limit, and a center turn lane.  I am approaching a stoplight in the far right (turn only) lane, in the middle of the lane.  Left lane is stopped at the light and two blocks worth of traffic.  I am traveling at 30MPH. (there was a cop in front of me, I normally go 35 here, with traffic.)  One block(about 50yds) away from the light, I am approaching a crosswalk. Big F350 in the left lane, stopped on the crosswalk...no room to move forward without blocking the intersecting street.  I roll off of the throttle(to idle) just before the crosswalk, maybe 10ft back. I am looking towards the turn lane in front of the big ford...as I get into the crosswalk out comes the car.  I applied front brake and disengaged the clutch at the same time.  The front end twitched a bit, and over I went on the left side.  As my left knee hit the ground, I sort of rolled off the bike, and impacted the passenger front bumper with my back, dead center.  Bike stopped under the front of the car, I'm laying in between bike and car.  Car bumper is broken pretty bad where I hit it(thank you padded gear). From when it pulled out into my lane, I had maybe 5 feet to stop.  Firefighters arrive, check my spine and remove helmet. EMTs arrive, recheck spine and off I go to ER for XRAYs.  I came out OK, bike is probably totalled.
My left knee is rashed up and I have paint on my jacket where I broke the bumper, as well as a big ass soon-to-be-bruise on my back.

I ca only be glad it was a new, soft car instead of a damn 67 chevy truck.

I went down to PD today and gave them my information. They didn't get any of it yesterday as I was in the ER.  Cop says I am not at fault..Insurance guy is 90% sure they are gonna total it. oh well. I wonder how much a buy back would be?  :wink2: Cheap track bike maybe...

Ouch!  Easy fix though.  If the buy back is reasonable I'd jump on it.  Track bike is a good way to go, but putting it back on the road with a salvage title is easy too.  If you get enough from insurance you could easily keep it as a track bike and replace it with a newer f2 or f3

I have a somewhat ragged set of f2 track bodywork I'd sell cheap too if you do set it up for the track...

Wow Rex I'm going to sing with the choir and say I'm SO GLAD you're okay! It totally sucks about the bike, and I really hope you don't have any long term physical issues.  One thing I gotta say - take the physical therapy.  The other car's insurance should put you through physical therapy. I know it's not something a big mean ol' tuff guy like you prolly wants to do, but it'll pay off in the long run.

Hang in there and I hope you feel better very soon.  :therethere:

I just wanted to add to this a bit. A firefighter that I know through work came in today and was talking to me about this wreck.  He says the guys at the scene knew me once they saw my shirt (vague memory of that) and that they thought I was toast when they saw the scene.  His words were something like: yeah, they saw you in the road and thought they were gonna air freight[lol at that term] you to a hospital.  You hit that car hard.

Anyone who rides on this board, I cannot stress the importance of good and proper gear...without my padded riding jacket, I think I would be fucked up good.  X-Ray tech and fire guys both told me that.  If I can get a picture of the car, I will post it up on here for you guys to see.

I guess I'm pretty lucky to have the minimal damage that I do.

my friend went to a funeral yesturday for a guy who died on his dirtbike while racing some of his friends. What happened was his front tire dug into some soft sand and flipped him over the bars. He landed on the ground, but was then hit by one if his buddies dirtbikes that had also flipped. The handlebars from the flying bike destroyed his chest protector and the impact ruptured his aorta. The guy was wearing just about every piece of protective equipment available from custom molded knee braces to a leatt neck brace, but that didn't keep him from dying. He coded on his way to the hospital in the helicoptor. He was 41 years old and left behind kids and a wife. This just goes to show anything can happen on a motorcycle even when you think you are prepared for anything.

I agree...but you have to look at the differences in the situations.  Honestly, being hit by another bike like that is way random.  I think that riding on the street carries with it a whole different set of rules, and honestly, even If I had crashed all by my lonesome, the gear would have saved me from a ton of rash.

I'd rather sweat than bleed.

OMG I'm becoming a gear nazi :outtahere:
