I was asked for pictures of my 84 truck, it was my 1st Toyota 4x4 so I decided to make a thread of it. So lets see the rig that popped your 4x4 cherry, the vehicle that put in motion to where you are at now. We don't want just pics either we want all the stats you can remember, and if you still have it that's fine to. I wish I still had mine.

So here's mine and what it had on it as I remember it.

My first truck is the one I am modding now. 1985 p/u, 22re. When I bought it, it had a blown engine, rusty, egg shaped lug holed chrome wheels, and no tailgate. It came with a rolled 88 with a good engine and a pretty trashed body. I paid $1500 for the two. Here are the oldest pics I have of it from around thanksgiving. I have had the truck for maybe 3 years now? I am not sure. But anyways, here are the first pics of the truck. I used the tailgate and rims off of the 88. I swapped the engine from the 88. The tires are some 30 inch bridgestone dueler M/Ts. The shell came off of either an ext cab 3rd gen or an ext cab tacoma, I don't remember now. The Marlin rear bumper was the very first mod. I wheeled the truck like this for a couple years. I am not going to include new pics and new mod list, because it is a whole different truck now. This is the old days :gap:

Okay... maybe one current pic :gap:

my first 4wd toy was this 79 longbed with a blown up 20r and a 4 spd with a ghetto 5" body lift and 35 bfg's.  got it for $250  back in 2002 and threw in my 22re and wheeled the crap outta it, i also bobbed the bed and spray painted it blue

yota_krawler

wow thomas I honestly cant pictue you drivin that truck, maybe cause I am used to the 39.5s and 42s you roll now! It is a nice little truck tho. I saw one today I was really impressed by. It was an 86 blue ext cab with a shell. SR5, mild lift and 33s. Sounds plain but man it was just a sweet little truck!

yeah that used to be my baby i miss it a lot, but im on to BIGGER and better things now! I just put lots of blood sweat and tears into it not to mention cash! When i got it it was flopped and had a blown motor, I got it for $900 and the only good part it had was the detroit. I did the motor with my buddy then did sheet metal, it didnt even have a seat in it! I drove it out of my buddies garage to my house on a 5 gallon bucket!   :beerchug:!

I agree with Infernal...great thread.

Well, here is the story on my truck. My parents bought this truck brand new in 86. I was 8 years old and my brother was 4. We took some great family vacations in this truck. We even did some light wheeling in it. Both my brother and I learned how to drive a manual trans. with it, too! My parents kept it until my brother turned 16 at which point they gave it to him. For two years he used it as his daily driver and weekend off road toy. He was about ready to do some awesome mods to it when he was killed in a plane crash. My husband and I took it and planned to do the work my brother had always wanted to do. Fast forward 7 years and here we are. Here's the list of what we've done so far:

33X10.5 A/T tires
K&N Air Filter
Electric fan (broke and replaced with mechanical fan for turbo)
3 row radiator for turbo
Downey front bumper and skid plate
Downey T-bars and 3" suspension lift
4X Innovations tube doors w/ Quick disco hinges and custom cup holders!
Trail Gear sliders
Killer Toy Tops soft top
ARB Air Lockers (F/R)
ARB Standard Compressor
5.29 diff gears
All Pro Offroad rear bumper
Fiberglass fenders to fix the previous trail carnage (bought from Cal Mini Truck)
Cobra CB

On order/yet to be installed:
Downey exhaust system

Next on the list:
Long travel
35 M/T tires
Dual transfer case

Here it is shortly after my parents bought it...that's me, my mom and my brother standing next to it

And here it is now...

So I guess I will contribute. This was my first Toyota 4x4 (it was followed by a few).It was a 1981 Toyota 4x4 SR5 with a sunroof,I bought it off a soon to be Christian Pastor (at the time) in Pomona and it had a blue bed and some really bald 31" Mickey Thompson rear tires and brand new ones up front. When I bought it,I primered the bed, added the roll bar which I got free from my buddy Ernie, installed the 2 KC Daylighters on the roll bar,put a Dynomax muffler on it,Rancho shocks, added a new cassette player and bought a set of 32" BFG Mud Terrains that I bought from Super Shops  Sexy Woman Voice-->"Because everyone deserves performance"  Ron,I know you remember that radio comercial.Anyway, the truck had 4:10s in the diffs with no kind of traction aids:

Here's another one I had.It was a 1986 that I bought off some guy in El Monte. The guy that sold it to me had just pulled the door speakers out (because he wasn't including them) and my girlfriend at the time went with me to go buy it.She was wearing sandals and when she got in,she hit her big toe on the sheetmetal and I had to drive her in my newly aquired truck  :talkingn: to the urgent care to get her toe sewn up  :smack: and to top it all off I broke a tie rod end coming out of the hospital...Anyway,when I bought the truck it had really bald 33" Winston Fun N Muds and had primer spots all over.I put some chrome spoke wheels on it that I got from my Dad and a set of junkyard 33" BFG All Terrains.I also added a roll bar on this one,a smittybuilt pre-runner light bar with 2 KC Daylighters and had the truck painted all red...I sold it to my Dad's friend's son who rolled it 2 weeks later on a golf course in Diamond Bar and destroyed it.Same thing,4:10s and no traction aids:

Here's another one. This one was a 1984,when I bought it it had fiberglass bedsides and fenders with 31" BFG mud terrains and centerline wheels,3" Rancho springs and it had a super built motor built by DOA Racing.I changed out the bed,got brand new 33" BFG muds with new Alcoa wheels and added a rear Detroit Locker that Hicks' 4x4 in Pomona installed.I think this was the most built Toyota I owned back then.I had big plans for this one,7" Superlift springs,5:29s,a front Detroit locker and 38s,I had allready bought 2 of them when I sold the truck.

I think my brother would have been pleased as well. So far we've done just about everything he was going to do, except for the Long Travel kit. And, hopefully that will happen soon.

A couple things I forgot to mention about this truck...in 1991 the engine caught fire in the driveway of our house. My parents had it repaired and kept the truck (so glad they did). Also, in 2004 this truck was stolen from a park and ride up here in Hesperia. It was missing for a week and I thought it was gone forever. The cops found it abandoned on the railroad tracks. I was so happy when we got it back. Nothing was missing except for the rear window wiper and the gas cap.

You'd be guessin' correct, those would be Yokohamas and Goodyear MTR's, I didn't post any with the Thornbirds since all of them had over the kb's so I'd have to resize them. Plus you couldn't really tell since all of those pics are taken from video since about the time I got those I was videoing everything with my new 8mm camera.

1984 FJ60.  Color was Dark blue.  I don't have any pics I don't think.  It was my dad's cruiser, and thats the first 4x4 I ever drove, sitting on my dad's lap in 1990 :gap:  I even got to shift!  Drove all the time on old fire roads in and around Colorado Springs.

1987 dodge caravan with the 1.8l mitsubishi engine.  Was my first car in HS, took that thing mudbogging, rockcrawling, trail running, and racing.  Needless to say, I singlehandedly killed it.  Parents bought it new in 1987, and we owned it until right before its death in 2003 (saw it in PnP a few months after we sold it).
Ours was light blue

1990 dodge ramcharger.  Had a 360, auto transmission, rolling on 33" BFGs.  Broke a front axle shaft and totally screwed the steering when I hit a ditch I didn't know was there bombing around on open land.  Fixed it, and sold it, wanted to get something that could handle a beating a little better.  Plus, this thing was too nice to thrash.  the PO took really good care of it, and I knew I'd just beat it to hell.

I found a pic of my truck shortly after I got the engine in it. This was my first time wheeling alone.

It's not a good idea to wheel alone. Nice retro though

I meant alone as in without any one in the truck with me. Previously I had to have an adult with me due to the way our state's driver license program is set up. There were other people out there, I would just have to walk to the top of a hill to signal for someone.
