Obama as a possible president? If so, we're screwed

Just another thing to add to the pile

http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/07/25/obama-cancels-visit-to-us-troops-in-germany/

Quote
Barack Obama was not prohibited from visiting U.S. troops at military facilities in Germany, but it would have been awkward.

That was the suggestion from both the Obama campaign and the military Friday, after the Illinois senator drew criticism from Republicans for canceling his scheduled visits while in Europe.

Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said Friday the campaign was initially given clearance to land at Ramstein Air Base, but were told by the Pentagon Wednesday that the trip “would be viewed as a campaign stop.”

Obama also had plans to visit the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. Gibbs said on the flight from Tel Aviv to Germany, Obama made the call not to go.

“Senator Obama made the decision that we were not going to have wounded men and women become involved in a campaign event or what would be perceived as a campaign event,” Gibbs said.

Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman told FOX News the Pentagon did not tell Obama he couldn’t visit, but explained that he would be under specific restrictions.

“We do have certain policy guidelines for political campaigns and elections and what is appropriate and what is not appropriate in those situations,” he said. “The issue here is that if you are both a sitting senator and a political candidate … you need to do it in your capacity as a sitting senator or you have to do it with the restrictions that apply to any other candidate out there that might be running for office that is not a sitting senator.”

A memo sent out Wednesday from Undersecretary of Defense David Chu explained that Obama’s visit to such a military facility would be limited under these circumstances. Obama would not have been able to bring any of his campaign staff — only one Senate staffer and security. He also would not have been able to address the media or make any campaign-related statements.

The Obama campaign said Thursday it would be “inappropriate” to make such a stop on the campaign-funded leg of his trip, after the German magazine Der Spiegel reported on the cancellations.

John McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said, “Barack Obama is wrong. It is never inappropriate to visit our men and women in the military.”

McCain’s Senate colleague Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., also took a shot at Obama.

“I noticed that Obama had plenty of time to shoot hoops … but he didn’t have the time to stop by (the Ramstein base),” he told FOX News.

FOX News’ Justin Fishel and Bonney Kapp contributed to this report.

cliffsnotes.

Obama was planning on stopping in Germany to visit troops.
pentagon said he would have restrictions (no campaign staff, just security)
Obama cancelled trip, claiming that it would be inappropriate to make a "campaign stop" visiting with troops.

Is it just me, but it sure seems that because the Pentagon said he couldn't have his campaign staff with him, he opted not to go?

Point?  :dunno:

I've seen that email already.  I don't tend to believe chain emails, nor pass them on, especially without checking their validity.  But when more than a few news sources world wide make statements, it is a bit different.

The simple fact that he was under restrictions to basically not campaign, and he opted not to go because of those restrictions is :bull crap:

He has been invited to debate McCain on several occassions and he refuses to do so but he says he has invited McCain to do the same but he refuses to do it..   Uhhhh.....  I've seen McCain invite Nobama but never the other way around.. me thinks nobama is full of dooky.. shocker... :hahaha:  He starts stepping and fetching when he has no prepared notes or teleprompter to read off of.

It seemed extemely presumptuous to me to make a "campaign" speech in Germany to begin with, I don't know a lot about past politics, is this normal?

If you listened to any of his speeches in europe his ideas are straight out of the writings of Carl Marx.  Pretty scary.

A sitting Senator, Representative or Governor to go to a war zone...yes. To go to other countries and campaign...abnormal, and not in a good way!

Still, given the terrible image and diplomatic angst that most of the rest of the world feels towards us after the last (nearly)eight years, perhaps something can be said about trying to mend a few fences?

Remember - a lot of Americans are first and second generation immigrants, and so how the U.S. treats the rest of the world has a big impact on how they vote.  Plus, it also fits with the diplomacy aspect of his campaign - as opposed to waging more war.

Though, I suspect he'll just be like Regan on this - diplomacy on the surface and lots of smaller covert ops/business as usual.  Obama certainly doesn't strike me as that much less of a hawk than McCain.  In fact, he's quite aggressive compared to most of his party.  Just read some of the stuff that he's written.

ie - He voted against the war in Iraq *only* because he felt that we should have bombed the crap out of Saudi Arabia.  He believed that we were targeting the wrong guys.  Not that he had any objection to going to war in response to 9/11.  Far from it.

You'll note that he's all for increasing the levels in Afghanistan, and not by a small amount, either.

Well if it does him no good politicaly and he cant get photo ops with wounded soldiers then why would he want to waste he time and effort by stopping?

I have to admit I was a little let down when the guy I was pulling for did not get the Republican nomination. I Still would feel about 200% better about McCain being president than Mr. "Non Specific Change".

Eitherway thank God its not Hitlery.

I don't know if its the fact i am considered young around here and never agree with any of you, on that note, you all say he is acting in some ways as the president already and doing things that are not normal? Well funny thing is in one of McCain's adds its ends with President McCain in the left side and his picture on the right. Sounds a little forward to me also.....

But I guess they both picked who they are targeting for votes, Obama for people in college like me. And McCain old people who could croke at any second like him.

As for me though, I am waiting to see who vice pres choices are. And no i am not a bleeding heart nineteen year old liberal. Just saying they do the same crap, just like every campaign.

I'm guessing you haven't been a democrat for long, cause that's generally how they roll!  They try and appear young and hip and appeal to younger folks by falsely getting their hopes up with the buzz word "change".  Maybe being a little older we understand that no good change will come out of them.

The thought that we may disagree with you because of your age is a shallow presumption, but that may be twisting your words a bit.  This is an off-roading based forum, and democrats typically don't feel public land should be public to everybody, so it only makes sense that the majority of members here lean more heavily toward the right   MOST of us probably agree that government is the problem, not the solution, and that the more they delve into our personal lives the worse off we are.

x2 with nate, keep in mind i'm only 20 (turn 21 in 3 weeks :woohoo: ) but active duty military. i'll put it this way and every other soldier i've talked to has agreed with this statement. hillary would be like getting nuked, obama like taking a sidewinder missile, and mccain like stepping on a toe popper landmine. they are all bad options but in this case (as with most elections) you have to go with whats the least messed up for this country.

from a strickly military standpoint mccain would be wonderful in a sense. pay raise, better funding for the stuff we need such as armor, weapons, tools, etc. yes he has no problem staying in the middle east but obama doesnt care about leaving either and obama wont visit the troops unless he can bring his support staff with him. obama wants to cut some military funding, not near as bad as hillary but still a really bad idea because when money goes away the equipment we use to protect ourselves and make our lives less dangerous goes away.

I still don't know if I can pull the lever for McCain...if I do, it will not be in support of him. It will be against the socialist ideology that Obama represents. The effects of his policies would be particularly odious if the Dems keep control of both houses of Congress.

like has been mentioned and agreed upon, they're both bad options, just gotta pick the lesser evil of the 2. i couldnt care less about the person its about their political beliefs and their character. i dont support obama's beliefs, disturbs me that most people dont see his stance and what his agenda is. nearly identical to communism, you hear about "change" but he never says what will change or how he plans to go about it. he sidestraddles every conflict. doesnt support being in iraq but supports soldiers being in the middle east and REALLY wants to increase the number of soldiers in afghanistan. doesnt oppose the 2nd amendment but supports strict gun controls similar to what washington DC had. i know where mccain stands on those issues, dont need to even attempt to read between the lines there he's willing and historically has been outspoken with his views.

if you support him thats your right and your opinion, just make sure its because of the right reasons. not his promises, not looks, not his ability to give a speach. base your vote on their backbone to actually follow through with what they are talking about and that their ideas/plans match yours.

It's been said before, but I'll say it again... we'll be picking the lesser of evils come November. I don't think we've had a "good" choice since Reagan, but now I'm showing my age and bias. Personally, I think McCain will be the lesser of evils, but I fear that there are too many out there who just want the Iraq/Afganistan wars to be over (Only because they want peace, not because they want us to finish the task we've started), and who will fall for the undefined change that is being bellowed.

It's unfortunate that the masses only listen to the pre-digested fodder that is put out by the news media, and don't take the time to really understand the major issues and form a intelligent opinion about them before looking at the candidates. I'ts very easy to promise anything you want while being a candidate, 'cause you can always claim congress blocked your ideas and that you had to compromise, which means that you didn't accomplish anything. Besides, most American's don't have an attention span long enough to remember what any of them said even a week before the election. What scares me is how many votes Obama will get because 1. He's charismatic 2. race 3. Youth. I heard people say they were going to vote for hillary because she is (at least on the surface) a woman. [who the hell cares?]

As Abnormaltoy said,  it will probably be a protest vote.

I'll probably mess the details of this up, but a couple of weeks ago I heard Hannity say that the unemployment rate is really like 15% or higher and that the numbers are around 9% or 10% only because the Nobama administration shortened the amount of time people are able to collect welfare. So what happened is that with a shorter period available to collect it, less people are collecting, and because they base the unemployment in part on how many ppl are collecting welfare, the "unemployment rate" is "lower" but in reality just fewer ppl are able to collect their welfare. It's all a number manipulation of course...

Dang Mikey why ya gotta listen to hannity?  That whiny, sniveling, snot bag annoys the crap out of me... Yes he knows his stuff but the way he presents it is terrible IMO.  Get sirius and you'll find people that know their stuff that don't need to whine. :talkingn:  Mike Church is a helluva constitutionalist and Andrew Wilkow is an unapologetic guy that knows his stuff as well.

But yes you're right, the unemwelfare rate is much higher and will be MUCH higher at the end of the summer when all the temp jobs are over..

But yes you're right, the unemwelfare rate is much higher and will be MUCH higher at the end of the summer when all the temp jobs are over..

meh the only person on sirius worth listening to is bubba the love sponge =P

Bubba is a passe terrestrial radio host with a 1 day a week satellite show.  Not worth wasting the time to listen to.  Jason Ellis is though. :gap:
